I'm trying to think of some better snacks for babies/toddlers. I have a 1 year old and she has 2 teeth. What I remember giving my kids at this age was all from before we started to try to stay away from convenience-y type food. We would give them some cheerios, graham crackers and goldfish. And ofcourse there is fruit too.
Now I was thinking I could probably buy those items (cheerios/crackers/goldfish) in an organic variety, so at least that would be better. But does anyone have any other suggestions to help me get out of this boxed way of thinking?

Kacky - if your library has the book Super Baby Food - there are great lists for toddler snacks and things to make yourself. If you cannot get it let me know and I will type you out a list. I love this book - use it a lot till the babies start eating what we do.

I just read the book Disease Proof your Child, I can't remember the doctor's name who wrote it, but it's great! It has a lot of recipes and a ten day sample menu. I've been giving my kids pita bread with hummus, and at first I didn't think they'd go for it, but it's now one of there favorite snacks! I also do rice cakes plain or with organic peanut butter and raisins on top. Try buying your own popsicle maker. I pour organic fruit juice in each section and freeze it. When they are done they are not so hard a little mushy and the taste is delicious. Another favorite is organic yogurt with granola. Organic applesauce is great. Hope that helps a little.

These are great! Thanks! Now you'll see how I really don't know my way around a kitchen or grocery store for that matter, what is polenta?

Polenta is basically just coarse cornmeal boiled in water. (A lot like grits, supposedly--I've never had them.) Usually people add cheese and butter and all that, but I leave it plain since my littles will be eating it. I make it in big batches in the slow-cooker, then pour it into a baking dish to cool. It hardens in the fridge and is easy to slice or cube for my toddlers to feed themselves. (We also like it as a side dish for the grown-ups, of course!)

I try to keep my muffin bin full, she makes a crummy mess but I like knowing she's eating healthy.

I second the Super Baby Food book - it was my "go-to" book for my DD and now for my DS (until they eat what we eat). Wonderful source!!!!!

My gang loved the miniature bagels, plain at first-even frozen for a teether, and later with peanut butter or cream cheese. I was even known to tie a clean string through the hole and secure it to my jogging stroller.
little cubes of melon-frozen, blueberries too- but halve them
cheese strings or cubes
and oddly enough,
cold pasta with tomato sauce and grated veggies(the veggies are in the sauce-anything that looks sad in the criper gets grated and added to the marinara sauce.) rotini worked best for this and it is obviously a "high chair" snack- not an "on the go" one.
whole wheat pretzels
Buy a mini muffin panand use any muffin recipe to make dozens of teeny ones

Celeste,
I've seen rolls of "corn meal mush" at our grocery store. Is that the same thing as polenta? My toddler can't have gluten so I'm always on the lookout for something that's made without wheat.
