We're going to concentrate on reading his stories this year.
What I'm confused is whether or not his original books had color illustrations? And if so, do any reprints have his color plates?
What are your favorites of his books?

I don't know of any reprints having the color plates.
The original books do have color plates. We own originals of:
The Burgess Seashore Book for Children
The Burgess Bird Book for Children
The Burgess Animal Book for Children
The Burgess Flower Book for Children
I found all these vintage books on abebooks.com about five years ago when I was doing Ambleside Online with my oldest daughter. These books are all treasures!
I paid between $25 and $45 per book for each if my memory serves me right. From the little bit of research I just did, it seems like the price for vintage copies of these books has gone up a bit.
The Bird book and the Animal book have been our favorites by far!
Have fun with Mr. Burgess! In the past, we have used his seashore book before we hit the beach and I have read aloud from his bird book each day as we sat in front of our big window doing a bit of bird-watching. Fun, Fun!

Rats. I was afraid of that. This will take longer to collect, I guess. 
But thanks for the advice. Now, can you tell me what is the writing difference between the series of "The Burgess._____ Book for Children compared to his adventure and Old Mother and animal stories. I presume the former is more factual?

I just bought the bird book (with plates) at a used book store for about $15. They had the animal book, but it was $25. So, it shouldn't break the bank too badly to get the originals.

Yes, I definitely don't want to break the bank, and it does seem they generally run about $25...I wouldn't want to go much higher than that, or then it wouldn't be a book that we would want to use. 
I found this list of hardcover Thornton books from Amereon? I couldn't find much information on the publisher, but the one book says it has color illustrations.
This site is really neat...makes me want to live in MA. The Green Briar Jam classes sound really fun. I think I'm going to order their jam cookbook....
As an aside, the problem with searching Out-of-print books is that I take too many rabbit trails and it takes a lot out of my day. It's fun, but not time efficient to find the best price and information for a used book.

Since I found these in my search, I thought I'd share these links on Burgess:
Comprehensive Book List. Quite a few here!
Bio and online books of Burgess. In the sidebar is a list of all the books in html on this site. No graphics, all html, kind of hard to read.
The Baldwin Project has a few of his books online. I just noticed the Bird Book and Animal Books both have the color illustrations included.
Bedtime Stories for Children. Neat scanned images of the book that was originally used to accompany a calendar. BTW, the whole site is really, really neat.
These are the Full View Google Books by Burgess. There are a few stories for Boy Scouts.

Yes, they are a bit more factual but the stories are still engaging none-the-less. Burgess was a master at weaving a good tale. The premise of the Animal Book revolves around the character of Old Mother Nature giving lessons to Peter Rabbit and his friends about their "families." She wants them to learn all about their animal friends and they begin with Peter himself. The first lesson begins when Old Mother Nature asks Peter to share what he knows about his own family. It begins with the following dialogue:
"Peter scratched one ear with a long hind foot and hesitated as
if he didn't know just how to begin. Old Mother Nature waited
patiently. Finally Peter began rather timidly.
"Of course," said he, "the only way I know how I look is by the
way the other members of my family look, for I've never seen
myself. I suppose in a way I look like all the rest of the Rabbit
family. I have long hind legs and short front ones. I suppose
this is so I can make long jumps when I am in a hurry."
Old Mother Nature nodded, and Peter, taking courage, continued. "My
hind legs are stout and strong, but my front ones are rather weak.
I guess this is because I do not have a great deal of use for them,
except for running. My coat is a sort of mixture of brown and gray,
more brown in summer and more gray in winter. My ears are longer for
my size than are those of most animals, but really not very long after
all, not nearly as long for my size as my cousin Jumper's are for his
size. My tail doesn't amount to much because it is so short that it
is hardly worth calling a tail. It is so short I carry it straight
up. It is white like a little bunch of cotton, and I suppose that
that is why I am called a Cottontail Rabbit, though I have heard that
some folks call me a Gray Rabbit and others a Bush Rabbit. I guess
I'm called Bush Rabbit because I like bushy country in which to live."

we love these books! i think we own just about every one. we searched online and got most of them for less than $20. we even planned a vacation to the burgess museum/cape cod a few years ago. i'm looking forward to reading them all again with my girls.

Are ALL the illustrations in the 4 books (listed below) in color in the original 1920's editions?
The Burgess Seashore Book for Children
The Burgess Bird Book for Children
The Burgess Animal Book for Children
The Burgess Flower Book for Children
I have found reprints in the 1940's and 1950's online that have color AND B+W illustrations, but if the originals have only color then we would like to buy those.

We love burgess books and I never knew there were color versions! $25 a book is a lot to me tho. ESP as you can get the b/w books for under $10

I have The Burgess Bird Book for children--printed 1919 and it has all color plates.
The Burgess Seashore Book for Children--printed 1945--has 42 total plates, 5 are b&w.
I have the Animal (1950) and Flower Book (1936), too, they both have about the same amount of b&w plates as the Seashore Book.

There is so much at librivox but to be truthful I found it all a bit overwhelming at first. I actually ended up searching Yesterday's Classics and Baldwin Online Project for author ideas. (Sorry I can't link for you my computer is mucking up) That's how I found Burgess. There were other old treasures also, do you have any particular genre in mind? More nature titles?
