How is it that diapers have changed THIS MUCH since my last order (which was with the original Natural Baby Catalogue when owned by the Waldorf mom, btw )????
I have decided I still want my old system of pinned prefolds (mind you, the covers I used to buy no longer exist, but I think prowraps are the closest to them). I need to place my order soon though, as I only have 2 dozen in the house and that means having to do laundry too often, imho! I confess the fitted diapers that you still pin are calling to me for their cuteness, even though they are incredibly expensive...
I digress...
I am trying to determine the difference between inserts and doublers. The training pant I am looking at has a "pocket", which I presume I am supposed to fill with either an insert or a doubler, but I don't know which? And is it possible I could fill that pocket with a prefold that is artfully folded?

Also, what's the difference between bleached and unbleached prefolds, besides the bleaching process? Why would I want one over the other? I like to hang diapers, and part of my passion is that lovely-white-diaper-on-the-line look, so these diapers that look like they are stained with tea...I don't get it?
I've read most of the back threads on this topic, so I know there are moms here who are passionate about cloth diapering and who understand all these new diapering systems. I've gone back to cd's after years with disposeables, mostly because we are economizing, but I confess the charm of them has quickly won me over. What is it about the loveliness of cloth diapering????

I always thought the fitteds were cute too. Also, so expensive. I stuck with prefolds.

A doubler is used with a fitted, prefold, or all in one. It is laid on the diaper agaist baby's skin. It usually is for extra absorbancy, and if it is fleece, so the baby feels dry.
An insert is inserted into a pocket. It is for absorbancy, and has a barrier between it and baby's skin. So, yes, the training pant would be an example. You could definately insert a prefold into the pocket. A prefold will usually cause more bulk. [/QUOTE]

Some people do not like the chemical process of bleaching. I never had a problem with it. I have also heard that unbleached diapers last longer. My bleached prefolds have been through my 4 girls and at least 1 more child. I am giving them to a family friend as they are still in decent shape.

I did not really ever see it. For me, cloth was about $$ and allergies.

Angi had some great answers for you!
The only thing I thought of is that my unbleached Indian PFs seem softer to me than my bleached Chinese PFs. Maybe it's the difference between Indian/Chinese though? I don't know. I prefer the unbleached Indian.
I do find cloth diapering charming. I also do it for economical reasons, but there is something so sweet about that extra face time with the baby (or in my case right now, toddler), something about folding and stashing them away, and something about wrapping that baby up in something soft that is lovely to me too! <3

I always loved the fitted diapers but then they got so expensive for us to buy...they seemed to leak quite a bit. I switched over to using regular cloth diapers with pins and lovely diaper covers that were sold down the street from us at someone's at home business which was such a blessing. That is where i bought my first baby sling...ah...i miss those days!
And I agree...I love the feeling of wrapping the baby up in the cloth diapers...it just seemed so right!

I found the best prices on Nicki's Diapers for what I need, and all her diapers are chinese, bleached or unbleached. Does anyone know if the softness factor is because they are Indian/Chinese or bleached/unbleached?
I'm thinking stuffing a prefold into the pocket would be cheaper than buying inserts since I need those already, and I'm not worried about bulk because this is just a nighttime issue. He's fully potty trained except when he's asleep.
I don't know what to make of the claim that bleached diapers don't last as long. I bought mine in 1993 with my first child. I gave 2 dozen away along with my natural baby catalogue covers when I swore off cloth while pregnant with #3. The two dozen I have left are still in great shape and those first two kids wore cloth exclusively for 3 ish years each, consecutively, so that's at least 6 yrs of daily use plus many more years of burp cloth etc type use. If the unbleached last longer, then I guess I should be using them to wash windows when I'm way past menopause!
Mari, I confess I'm glad to hear you had leaking problems with your fitteds, as that helps me to bypass them in favor of the more economical options!

Books, I am still using diapers from '91! Gerber bleached pre-folds.
I have unbleached Indian. They are soft and wonderful, but they also retain the smell more than my old Gerber ones ever did. Then again I don't use bleach as often nowadays. I am not sure if the soft is the Indian part or the unbleached.
I have one fitted diaper, from Blue Penguin, and I really, really like it! But it is more pricey and I don't really need more.
I want to love cloth diapering, but instead of extra "face time" with baby I feel like I am wrestling a crocodile! Pocket and all-in-one diapers are okay, but trying to hold my big guy still will I get him pinned and covered is a workout!
For great information on diapering, I like Green Mountain Diapers. She has lots of information about all types of diapering.

I am wrestling a croc as well, Molly. Mine is only 1 mo. older than yours so it must be a wiggly stage. He keeps trying to grab the pins when I take them out of the diaper, too.
I think I'm going to go with the bleached ones. I just can't get into the visual of the unbleached ones on my clothesline. Is that weird???

I have just started using cloth nappies and mcn with my 5th baby, and I am enjoying it. Yes, enjoying it There is just something about using something which love has gone into the washing and folding of, rather than an item that gets tossed out. Either that or I've finally gone loopy
I bought one item each of a range of things to try before buying in bulk to see which I would like best. All in bamboo, but if you live somewhere cold this would most likely be highly unpractical as it is taking me a day plus (in winter) to dry them. All Australian too, as I like to support locally made products. So you won't be familiar with any brands I could mention.
I fancied that I would like the 'all in ones' but actually my favourites have been the terry cloth prefolds and flats in a pul or fleece cover. They are just so practical, easy to clean and dry.
A Bummi's super whisper wrap cover would be good, they are nice and thick and if I remember right you can throw them in a hot wash too. Mine seem to be okay with it anyway.

I just thought, if you are using nappies only for night I have found placing a small bamboo fleece prefold like this http://www.babybeehinds.com.au/store/pc/BBH-Bamboo-Fold-Ups- 2-layer-2p7.htm into the flat or prefold really helps to make the nappy last all night. My dd is only 3mnths though so I don't know how it would go for an older baby. But she has to do quite alot of wee before it feels damp on the outside of the terry nappy.
I'm planning to buy some heavy weight bamboo fleece to make some more. Even though they take a while to dry if they are only been used for night you can get away with only having 3-5 depending on how often you wash. They have been one of my 'best buys' for the moment, it will be interesting to see how they are when dd does bigger wees.
