Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think I've tried every book out there (well, except the Ezzo books ). I'm an attachment parenter who would just like to get a good night's sleep for a change. I don't think I've slept through the night since my first was born. If its not pregnancy insomnia, its toddlers and babies...I know you know how it is. I'm getting older and its not as easy as it used to be. My 18 mos old is still waking up all night long. I don't even care if he is in our room...I just want him to sleep through the night.

If you have read this book, can you tell me if it offers anything different from Ferber, the Baby Whisperer and the No Cry Sleep Solution (none of which worked for us)?

Yes it is different from Ezzo, Ferber and co. and also different from Pantley, Sears, et al.

It's sort of a middle ground between the two.

She has you staying with your child and comforting him verbally and (initially) by patting or rubbing his back, but moving farther away every few nights (start sitting on the bed, then move to a chair next to the bed, then move the chair halfway between the bed and the door and so on).

It's really nothing magic, though, and I recall thinking that a lot of the book seemed like a pitch for the sleep coaching (counseling?) service that she offers.

Isn't that the Pantley approach, moving the chair gradually?

Yes, I think it is, but Kim West's version is different and, I thought, considerably less APish. As I remember (and it's been a few years since I read the book so I'm not sure how accurately I remember it) West's approach seemed much more something you do to your child - regardless of how he responds. She also emphasized not being predictable in the way you comfort your child (not patting him with a regular rhythm, for example) so that the child doesn't become accustomed to the new form of comforting which I couldn't wrap my head around. How can something unpredictable be comforting?

On the whole I didn't care for her system and didn't try it, but I do think it's a great deal better than the Ezzo/Ferber mentality.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it. It sounds like its a good book to get from the library, but not something I want to pay for...
