Please use this thread to share some thoughts or quotes from the book you're reading.
I think it will help me to keep on my reading schedule if I have someone to talk to about my book. I hope this will help you too!

I even had them bookmarked to share...
As you may remember I'm reading about the life of my confirmation saint, St Teresa of Avila. When I chose this saint as a child, I didn't make the choice for lofty, spiritual reasons completely, there was a childish element to my decision making.
My mother and aunty had chosen 'little' Theresa and I thought I'd choose the 'big' Teresa to be different, though I knew they were both Carmelite saints and my parents were third order Carmelites. I did read her life (maybe her own writings? can't remember..) at the time and was drawn to her.
As I've gotten older I have the distinct feeling she chose ME! There is so many little things about her that I can relate to in some way or other..
This quote is an example of that:
Quote:
"I was so frightend and pained that I did not know what to do. All I could do was weep."
In this state she went to her oratory, and absent-mindedly picked up a book and opened it at random to a page of the Epistle of Saint Paul. "I thought the Lord had put it into my hands"; for her eyes fell gratefully upon these words of the Apostles to the Gentiles:
"And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able..."
Teresa took heart again and asked Salcedo to bring a Jesuit father to see her. |
|
|
This happened during one of St Teresa's darkest trials and periods...
When HT first started and a 'welcome' post was opened, I shared some of my previous spiritual trials interwoven with serious health problems and how my love for Our Lady grew from that.
During that period I would suffer so badly the ONLY words that would give me comfort were, "God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able."
It was one quote that became part of my thin life line through the trials.
They are words to comfort everyone at all times and I am sure that they bless someone today, just reading that quote and pondering upon it.

I am reading Mother Teresa by Kathryn Spink and I love all of Mother Teresa's quotes! I am so moved by her life, her faith in action, her deep capacity to love.
"If we want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a
lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it. "
"Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love
we put in that action."
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without
leaving happier. "
"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But
the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

I loooove Saint quotes! Thank you for starting up this great thread Helen!
MariB ~ am going to print it and tape it above my kitchen sink:)
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. "
And Anne, this one is going in my bedroom.."And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able..." when at night, everything always seems more challenging compared to the morning, after a good night's sleep!
THANKS!!!!

The book I'm reading Mary and the Priestly Ministry is a book for my head challenging me with very deep concepts about Our Lady as Mediatrix of All Graces.
Today's few pages were a great reminder about the depth of Total Consecration. Fr. Neubert writes that there are various types of consecration and all very pleasing to Our Lord and Our Lady but he also challenges us to make the deepest offering, one which expects no reward.
wrote:
Properly speaking, consecration means giving oneself to Mary without any expectation of a return. It is made to please her and to furtheer her intersts above all. |
|
|
This statement could have been taken from a book by St. Maximilian Kolbe who says Consecration is all about being "Unlimited."
Fr. Neubert writes in the spirit of Bl. Chaminade (1700's -- I'll have to check the date). Bl Chaminade didn't know St. Louis de Montfort nor St. Maximilian. I think this is very interesting.

Oh boy, does this quote have my name written all over it!
Whoever is punctual at the first instant will be punctual the whole day. Whoever lingers for even a few seconds in rising does not receive from God those graces that he would have received, were he faithful to the first punctuality of the day.

Wow, thanks! I do find this to be so true! It is helpful to hear the truth spoken in these terms. I like this phrase, "the first punctuality of the day."

Jenny I had to come back today to thank you again for this quote. I remembered it first thing this morning. I've been sick and have missed morning Mass for the past three days. I am (finally!) feeling better but this morning the temptation to stay in bed for "just a little while longer" was so strong even though I knew there was nothing preventing me from getting up and going to Mass.
As I lay there wrestling with myself to "get up" or "just stay there" I remembered this quote you posted yesterday, said a prayer of thanksgiving for your posting it and got up and went to Mass. I am so thankful I did and prayed for you special while I was there too!

The first time I heard of "heroism in the morning" was from St. Josemaria Escriva. He recommends the same practice. St. Josemaria's feast day is tomorrow -- June 26th.

"heroism in the morning"
isn't that the truth!
A friend and I were just talking recently about the corporal works of mercy in our family. "Feeding the hungry" can translate in my home to joyfully having breakfast ready for my children in the morning. "Clothing the naked" means having my laundry caught up so they can easily find their clothes and then, again joyfully, helping the little ones get dressed.
"heroism in the morning!"

I just thought this quote was a lovely thought for my day today, especially since St. Josemaria Escriva's feast is today. I wanted to share it.
From The Furrow:
St. Josemaria Escriva wrote:
"That passage of the Second Epistle to Timothy makes me shudder, where the apostle laments that Demas has fallen in love with this present world and gone to Thessalonica. For a trifle, and for fear of persecution, this man, whom Saint Paul had quoted in other epistles as being among the saints, had betrayed the divine enterprise.
I shudder when I realise how little I am: and it leads me to demand from myself faithfulness to the Lord even in events that might seem to be indifferent - for if they do not help me to be more united to him, I do not want them." |
|
|
This quote struck me especially as it relates to my vocation - faithful in little things, faithful to the daily duty, faithful as the Blessed Mother was always faithful. Praying as St. Josemaria did, "Virgo fidelis, ora por nobis, ora pro me." - Virgin most faithful, pray for us, pray for me.

"Be sure, if the enemy of our souls is pleased at anything in us, it is ingratitude of whatever kind. Why? ingratitude leads to so many breaks with God and neighbour".
