Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jen had posted corresponding stories of the Angel Food Series by Father Brennan with the Baltimore Catechism in this thread

I have all these old books; ever since I was little I've enjoyed Father Brennan. This is so helpful to coordinate for my school year.

My question is that MDOG suggest Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls, the 4 volumes. I love the great job Neumann does for reprinting, but they are so pricey!

Does anyone have both of these series? Can you compare? What do your children like better? Could I easily just use Father Brennan's?

I so wish I could compare them for you, Jenn, but I don't have the Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls. They sound so similar!

The Catholic Stories were on my list this year, but I ended up ordering some other things from Neumann Press for my little fella...well, ok...I ordered a lot of other things from Neumann Press - so I bumped the Catholic Stories because I was in a similar position as you and decided that since he was enjoying the Angel Food books with his older brother and sister, I'd just stick with those and maybe order the Catholic Stories set mid-year.

I'd love to hear any reviews as well if anyone has both sets and could offer a comparison.

I have one book of the Catholic Stories....I'll be back later to compare....remind me if I forget.

Of course, now that I have THE LIST, I use the Angel Food books WAY more now...because they are catagorized    So, that right there would make a big difference to me which one I would buy.

I didn't realize until after I posted this that Angel Food is also reprinted by Neumann. I just happen to have the older versions.

Suzanne, waiting with baited breath.

The one negative side on so many of these reprints is that they aren't beautiful or inviting on the outside covers (no dust jackets or color pictures). You can't judge a book by its cover, but it is helpful when the child is drawn to the book to actually pick it up and read it.

The Catholic Stories for Boys and Girls are beautiful stories but a little on the long side. Father Brennan's Angel Food books are short, cheerful and full of memorable stories. The Catholic Stories IMO, seem geared toward older children or even parents who love beautiful stories of Our Faith. One of my son's did read a neat story in one of the volumes about an Indian burial ground in Emmittsburg just a jog down from Mother Seton's place. I believe the Blessed Mother appeared there. I don't remember all the details, but when we were at the Shrine in Emmittsburg, my then 9 yo asked the gentleman working where the burial grounds were and he was shocked anyone (let alone a 9yo boy) would know about it. I'm glad I have the books in my collection but the Angel Food books are reached for again and again. My older ones love to read their favorites aloud to their younger brothers and sisters.

The drawings in the Catholic Stories, if I remember right, are the black silhouettes and weren't very appealing to my children.

Just thought I'd share: My favorite Father Brennan by the way is The Ghost of Kingdom Come, excellent story about a ghost who visits Father Brennan while he is staying in a castle, great All Saints time story, GREAT boys book. I love Father Brennan and have been collecting every book I can find of his.
