Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, we're here in Englewood and Ed "passed" all his pre-op tests with flying colors, so he's set to be admitted to Craig Hospital tomorrow (Sunday) and is having a spinal shunt put in on Monday morning. The surgeon says I can go over with him to Swedish Hospital next door where the surgery actually will by done, leaving around 6:30 am, and the surgery is scheduled to start between 7:30 and 8. The OR is reserved for 8 hours, but Dr. Falci doesn't think it will be that long. He's just being cautious.

We feel very confident in this doctor's track record for successful spinal surgeries. His NP says she'll come out every hour or so to update me on what's going on. After he's stable, he'll go back over to Craig Hospital, since their total focus is on neuro stuff. We're looking at spending around the next two weeks here barring complications.

We can stay here at the hospital apartment until the day after surgery, and we were looking at spending $$$$$ at a hotel, until I went searching the internet for the nearest Catholic parish. On the St. Louis bulletin was a notice about St. Vincent House, an apartment for families in just our situation (we have the 4 youngest with us, ages 7, 11, 11, and 16). So we get the apartment next Tuesday, and it has a washer/dryer and a gas stove (been struggling with no oven and 2 electric burners--I'm kissing that gas stove when we get there!). It's downstairs, so dd who uses a wheelchair and walker will get quite the workout, but we're up to it.

Please keep Ed in prayer for successes in this surgery. The doc hopes that it will stop the many sensory/functional losses he has experienced due to a very severely scarred and atrophied spinal cord (long story, furious at doctors at home). There is a small chance that he could get some feeling and function back. I'm asking St. Therese, since she experienced spinal pain from t.b., to intercede that he WILL get something back. He's such a precious guy!!

Thanks for your prayers, and I'll keep you updated.

Mary Alice, not in Kansas but in Englewood, CO

Mary Alice - I'm not sure if you have access to internet right now...but I was wondering how Ed is doing? We were praying all day Monday - what a grueling wait that must have been!

In any case...I'll just keep the prayers coming until we hear more...how I long to hear something good...or even GREAT!

Before the boards close for Sunday, I wanted to update for Mary Alice. Gwen and I were able to visit with her and the kids yesterday for a few hours at the park.

Anyway, as of yesterday, Ed was progessing very well and is ahead of where they expected him to be by about a week. The doctors are even saying it might be possible for them to return home early next week. This would be a miracle as the earliest they had told them from the beginning was the end of the month. Of course, all of this depends on his continued good recovery and no set-backs. So I am posting for continued prayers. Mary Alice extends her appreciation to everyone and knows pray is getting them through!

Monday,6/22 - yesterday Mary Alice was concerned because his pb was elevated and he was having a few other minor problems. Praying it isn't a setback.

I'm so grateful for the update, Mary, and rejoicing that Ed seems to be progressing so quickly!!!

My prayers continue - I can just imagine the huge sigh of relief in reuniting all at HOME!

Praying for Ed, his recovery and his family. I had spinal surgery as a teen and still have minor nerve issues, so this intention is near to my heart. I will pray to St. Therese too.

I talked to Mary Alice and Ed is doing well - they are scheduled to leave tomorrow and head back home which is great!

But she called am a bit ago as one of daughters is really sick - it came on suddenly. She is concerned enough to head to the emergency room/urgent care instead of waiting until this afternoon when she could get an appointment.

Let's pray she is okay and that they will still be able to travel soon.
