Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I received this email message from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Celebrate Urban Birds group. It looks like such fun. We have definitely seen some birds nests in interesting places throughout the years. And this is incentive to go exploring and looking specifically for these funky nesting sites.

Dear Birding Friend,

You find them in hanging flower baskets…an old boot…a garage shelf…or under a bridge…birds build nests in the strangest places! That’s the theme for the newest environmental challenge from our Celebrate Urban Birds project: Nests in Funky Places! As you may know, Celebrate Urban Birds is a free, year-round citizen-science project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, focused on birds in neighborhood settings.

For the Funky Nests in Funky Places challenge, we want you to take photos, do a painting, write a story, or shoot a video showing a bird’s nest built in some out-of-the-way or out-of-this-world place. When observing nests please be sure to avoid touching them or disturbing the birds.

You can go to the website to read the rules and how to send in an entry. You can also see the entries that have been submitted so far. There are some really fun ones - I especially like the hummingbird nest on the clothes pin (#29) - amazing!

Whenever I think of nests in funny places I think of these classic books - The Best Nest (P.D. Eastman) and Fly High Fly Low (Don Feeman). So fun! So check them out for a little motivation and head out for some funky nest finding together.

Nesting Bird Considerations - great info here on learning about nesting behaviors, tips for finding nests, and guidlines & code of conduct for observing nests.

So if you end up finding a fun nesting site - post it here, too...I'd love to see it!

Mary,

Thanks so much. We have actually found 2 in the last few weeks. One was in our baby bike seat (which was in our shed--it was finally abandoned) and another in an open trash can in our shed. They build it among the rubble.

So any updates? Anyone found any funky nests? So far, what we've found this year is sort of ordinary tree nests though we are still searching. For the contest I did submit one we saw last year on our summer vacation. It was in the alarm bell on the side of a convenience store.
