I have a Land's End canvas bag in medium that I use as a diaper bag. It's actually meant to be a diaper bag - I found it in their overstocks. It's lined in some sort of wipeable, non-biodegradable fabric. Has some mesh pockets on the inside. It's a good, no-nonsense, practical bag. I love Lands End canvas bags.

Welllllllll.........at the ball game last night, it was drug through the dirt and it got really dirty - I mean not a sort of wipe it off/dust it off and move on kind of dirty, but a really ground in/this cannot come in my house dirty. Of course, the tag on the inside said spot-wipe only, do not wash...but I ignored that...I always ignore that tag.

It shrunk...big time. But, it's clean.    Seriously, the interior liner, which did not shrink is now twice the size of the canvas bag resulting in a super crumpled liner. The bag, though smaller, is still useable. My options...

:: Ignore it.
:: Cut the liner out and use the bag anyway.
:: Cut the liner out and use the bag as a travel/car bag and...
:: Go back to the consignment store where I left that adorable Vera Bradley meets girly pink quilted bag and use that as my diaper bag.

I think I'm leaning towards just cutting the liner out. I suppose I should have paid attention to the tag. I washed in cold though, really I did!

What would you do?

Weeeelll, a diaper bag is something that you likely use all the time - I use a back pack as my bag and carry it everywhere every day - so if I could afford it I would get a new one that was big enough and pretty. But I am on a "because I'm worth it" kick at the moment!

Cut out that liner and turn that bag into a mom's book tote, and RUN back to the consignment store!

Oh, girls...really?!

I'm headed to the consignment store on Thursday - I wonder if it's still there?

I'm going to cut the liner out tonight. What a ridiculous episode of laundry drama.

So, how does one clean a really dirty canvas bag? I have one that we used for lugging stuff to baseball and it is just filthy.

I learned my lesson to never buy a "natural" color canvas bag again!

what about if you used a scrub brush on it and wiped it off? the swishing around in the washer might be what breaks down the fabric and allows the shrinking.. the bags I have are simple and cheaper than the landsend bags so they go through the laundry..

Ummm....well, unless you'd like a small, but adorable hand bag...you don't put it in the washing machine on cold apparently.

In hindsight, maybe a really stiff bristle brush over the whole thing - perhaps a light misting of Mrs. Meyers and then another bristle cleaning with the brush to freshen it.

A water hose? Seriously. Like a pressure washer.

Jen I did the same thing - but it was worse. We had 6 natural canvas bags - not Lands End, given to us at Hilton Head when I worked a conference there a few years ago - they were lovely big bags - in one of my nesting frenzies I threw all of them in a cold wash and they shrunk and got all wrinkled up.

My canvas bag was never the same again after washing it. I now have an indestructible Tommy Hilfiger diaper bag...........but I'm sick of it. I think I had it for something like 6 years now and I am so ready for something new, but it won't die. I vote for the pink Vera Bradley.

Have you considered calling Land's End? I know you washed it, but honestly, I would expect better results than what actually happened. They are great about returns...their unconditional guarantee is pretty solid. If you feel its all your fault, then I wouldn't call, but if you feel that this amount of shrinkage is unreasonable, I'd give them a call and see if you can get a replacement without a lining in it, maybe????

You know, I'm the queen of calling merchants ...but in this case, it really is my fault. The tag is completely clear - do not wash, spot clean only. I'm thinking I have a new makeup bag and if the pretty Vera Bradley meets girly-girl quilted bag is still at the consignment store tomorrow...it's mine!    If not, it's not like I can't make do. But thank you, Books for the suggestion. I have done that before with much success from both Lands End and LLBEAN. They're both great about replacing products that are even...say...11 years old when you call about them! So, with those two merchants at least, if you ever find something not performing adequately - they will replace it!

Jen,

I would run to the consignment store too, but if it is not there check out the Vera Bradley online store. They are having a huge sale right now. I just got an enormous beach bag a few weeks back for under $20 (plus S&H).   We wash and dry our Vera's all the time here

It was still there yesterday, and I got it!!! So adorable...and pink...and washable!

Thanks ladies! Who else could I come to with such a silly dilemma?!
