My kids love our inflatable pool; it's great fun for them on rainy days (I put it on the porch) or on days we can't get to the pool. I've even figured out how to drain the thing fairly easily and use the water to water plants.
My question: How long do you let the water stay in and let the kids swim in it? One day? 2? 3? My kids always seem to get the water grungy enough that I want to drain it after one time, but that seems so wasteful.
In my research I read that some moms put a little clorox in the water after the first day and let the kids swim in it again. Makes me a little nervous to think of doing that, but it does kind of make sense. I mean, swimming pools have chlorine, after all...
Any thoughts?

how does the pool get gunky? if it's dirty feet, place a dishpan of water near it for feet rinsing, then step into the pool. for chlorox/bleach, you'd have to judge the amount, based on water amount. add, stir, let sit for about 30min. before more swimming (great time for lunch and books!)

The cleanliness of the water doesn't bother me....it's the slime that develops in the bottom and sides of the pool if we don't let the water out and give the pool some air.
We keep the water in for 2 days.....occasionally 3. Then dump it out at the end of the day 2 or 3, and let the pool dry overnight. Then fill it up again in the morning. Ohterwise, there is a layer of build-up...."yuck" and also "dangerous"....(the kids slip around).

We use a chlorine floatee thing that is used for spas. We keep it in the pool when the kids are not in it and take it out for them to swim. Works well.

Thanks, ladies. We definitely get the slimy gunk thing going after a couple of days. And the kids want to drag everything into the pool- even the cat! (strictly forbidden, though).
I will look for a chlorine floatee thing- would Walmart carry them?

I dump it when we're done using it. I don't like having even a few inches of water around with little people wandering about. Too much risk.

I always have the dc rinse their feet before getting as, as someone already mentioned. Also, depending on the size of the pool, there are all kinds of inflatable pool care kits available at Toys 'R Us, Target, etc. These days. Inflatable pools are incredibly popular! The kits usually include some kind of water care products. Sometimes I do find that after so many days, I do have to dump the water though. It just begins to get unsalvageable!
