My dh has been suffering from an ear infection for a while now. Our dr has prescribed antibiotics but also suggested that we may want to use oil of oregano in his ear or white table vinegar.

Has anyone done this before, and were you happy with the results?

I remember mullein being used by an old friend, but I've never tried that either.

Which one would be more effective -- oregano or mullein?

If you have any other suggestions/recommendations/advice, would love to hear it!

Thanks!

Stef,

We use a mullein/garlic oil combo with amazing results. My baby has had several ear infections and always threw up the antibiotic, so I tried the mullein/garlic oil following the dosing time of the antibiotic, I think 3 times a day for 10 days. My conventional doctor was amazed when we went in for the check up and said the infection was gone. Now, at the first sign of an ear infection for any of the children, I begin treating with the oil. It has a strong garlic odor though.

The name of the oil is Mullein Garlic Ear Oil by Equinox Botanicals. The ingredients are olive oil, mullein, garlic, Vit. E, tincture of benzoin.

My son, who is a paid American Indian reenactor, said the Indians always used the Mullein flower for ear ailments.

We use the oil of oregano here and also the Ear drops produced by the same people (I think it is St. John's Herbals)...

thank you for the info, gals...

went to whole foods and a local homeopathy store and they didn't have any of these -- not in the form of drops anyway, and i don't know enough to try anything else. the homeopathy store owner recommended colloidal silver drops but i have no knowledge about it either. and i have to admit, i'm more comfortable with herbal preps since my mom and grandma used those, but not metallic ones...

any thoughts on colloidal silver?

i'll order the oil(s) online if i still can't find it/them locally by tomorrow.

Stef -
Per our neighbor-naturopath, we use oil of oregano for a topical treatment for skin infections.....the kids are digging in the dirt and get an infection on finger, hand, etc. He gave us oregano oil CAPSULES and we poke them and squeeze the oil out.

We use garlic and mullein oil and we have never had to use antibiotics with ear infections in the last 6 years, thanks to it.

I imagine this is something you could make as well. If you have garlic in the house, squeeze some juice and add to the oil.

I'm waiting on the arrival of some mullein and then I'll be making my own lot of oil.

Sorry to be pulling in late on this. For all earaches of all sorts I use a drop of tea tree oil on a small round of cotton ball to fit inside the child's or adult's ear. Leave overnight because that's exactly when a sore ear seems to creep up and end us in the emerg room right? Actually I only discovered this remedy after child number three and it always worked like a charm for me. I would imagine oregano oil works the same for all of its "anti" properties it has just like the tea tree oil (antifungal, antiparasitic, anti-everything), but caution to ensure it is cut with olive oil or it could burn the skin.

for oil of oregano; it is my favorite baby for sinus and sore throat. Rub OUTSIDE of your throat in the area of question. Rub OUTSIDE of sinus areas from nose area down and around to mouth and all the way out to your ears. It might be warm on the skin (cut with olive oil) but believe me for a stuff nose you'll be blowing well in no time, and for allergy sufferers like myself at times, I am even braver. When a nasal passage gets (ooh la la) sore, I drop oil of oregano on the end of a q-tip and carefully raise it up my hose to the sore area and rub. Sure I may sneeze five or six times during the attempt, but you bet your bottom booty after a night's sleep, all is gone, gone, gone! Same for sore throat, same for sinus pressure and/or stuffiness. Don't be afraid to place a drop or two on your finger also and rub your child's gums and tongue, a germ hiding spot. Offer a drink of water after. When a sore throat is real nasty, drop a drop at the back of the tongue for the child to have run down their throat.

NO I'm not a quack, just tired of antibiotics that produce fungals and more yeast, and find stocking tea tree and oil of oregano oils are fantastic in our first aid kits. :-)

Hope this helps someone out. It's proved to be a wonderful remedy for anyone I've suggested it to also. Oh, and if you travel, bring it along, both of them and use internally daily especially if you leave North America. A friend went to Africa to adopt her two girls with family in tow. No one was ill, in fact all were feeling fantastic the entire month-long trip. And NOT to go to Mexico with this stuff is a crying shame. Keeps the food poison away. grin, grin.

Angie, where might you buy your Wally's products? I've not heard of them but just looked up the website from your link. They have great anti-everything contents in them. I wonder if I would find them in Canada? I noticed it said best when used after ear candling. Have you ever tried that? Feels fantastic really.('')

I've used this product for years and have found it at natural food stores/co-ops and the like throughout the US...not sure about Canada.

Love,

Anne, for homemade garlic oil.. mullein oil is best but for stuff you may have around.. olive oil and chop the whole garlic into it and heat on low heat until the garlic starts to brown.. get it out before it scorches.. just strain it out and use the oil once it's down to body temp.

You do need to keep it refrigerated though.

I heat the oil by shaking the bottle in hot water (a bowlful or running water) so that it's pleasantly warm and soothing when put in the ear.

chiming in late because I couldn't make sense before
