Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This comes up a lot at our house and I'd like a way of explaining it all from a more Catholic friendly perspective. My husband's family is Catholic and I want my kids to see Catholicism in a positive light.

We say that at the time there were some people in the Church who needed to make some changes and some aspects that needed to be dealt with (and later were dealt with), but that they went too far and that people who didn't love Christ's church made choices that broke apart the unity that Jesus wants for His people. Mainly for us, being English and dealing with a child who loves St Thomas More we talk more about the English so-called reformation and the terrible ripping apart of the Church in our country. Our son is 5, so sticking to the whole issue of Henry 8th and how he wanted his own way and not obey the Pope is an easy way in that is more understandable to a young child.

It hasn't been brought up as much here but we do basically what Lucy said.. let the kids know that there were valid concerns but that the people involved choose the wrong way to deal with those, seperating rather than fixing.
