Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been washing the sacristry linens for about two years, approx once every 6-8 weeks. This past week, as Father now uses red wine, it became very very obvious to me that the linens are liberally full of the Precious Blood - and I was so shaken by the realisation so visually of what I had known and not dwelled upon that I really feel I need to do something.

We are told to just wash the linens straight in the machine and iron them - not to do the soaking/pouring away process. When I checked with the sacristan, she said that water dilutes the Precious Blood and makes it just a wine stain, so as soon as the water goes in to the washing machine it is "just wine" - but I don't think this is true.

Do you think I should write a letter to the sacristan, saying that I have read xyz about it, and that I am wondering if that has an implication for how we wash the linens? DH initally thought I should just do the soak/pour away and then launder without saying anything further as the sacristan laughed off my concerns over the phone, but I feel it is a sort of sacrilege and that if I know about it I should raise it with the sacristan in writing and then go to Father if need be - and DH agrees. I just don't want to come off as being holy or criticising our sacristan.

Lucy, here's a link to a blog post that addresses this problem. I certainly would pursue this in charity with the sacristan, telling her that you are not comfortable just washing the linens without removing the stains and pouring them down the appropriate sink. If nothing else, perhaps she can accommodate your discomfort. Failing that, taking it to the priest seems like a reasonable next step.
