Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My "baby sister" is getting married in August and has asked me to do a "religious reading". Neither she nor the groom are really practising Christians, although she is baptised Anglican and they are being married in an Anglican church...they never go to church etc.

I am just not sure what to suggest. The Scripture readings I know of are either very predictable OR seem best for committed Christian couples: I think people would faint if I read from Ephesians for example! It is a nice chance to share some of the truth of what marriage and married love is - any ideas?

The "Love is....." reading from I Cor. 13 is kind of predictable, but is both beautiful and *practical*, which might have appeal to those who aren't used to reading the scriptures seriously (as well as to those who are )    At our wedding, we also used the Prayer of St. Francis, "Lord make me an instrument of your peace, etc.", which is also both beautiful and practical.

Peace,
Nancy

For my sister's wedding, I read Colossians 3:12-17, which I think has some beautiful words of advice for all married couples.

At our wedding many years ago one of the readings we chose was Ephesians 5:25-33. Very beautiful!

Those are all beautiful, but I just don't know if they are right for two non-Christians marrying in church because it is pretty and traditional. Plus the groom is a Mason and so are some guests - and I just feel standing there saying he should love my sister as Christ loves the church etc is laughable.

I love Proverbs 31, although I am not sure it fits your criterion of showing the truth about marriage and married love.

During our wedding mass our priest chose to read Matthew 7:21, 24-29.
It was a surprise during the ceremony but it has given me strength over the years.

The OT reading for our wedding was from Ruth, the "Whither thou goest" passage. If they are committing to each other, and each likes the other's family, it might work.
