Well, Cinco de Mayo isn't a Cuban holiday and old-style Cuban music is not at all like Mexican music, but I'm just a little partial to the Cuban.
Most of what I like is sung in Spanish, but Willy Chirino has stuff in English. Sorry I don't know of anything more appropriate!

Oh no, this is just what I'm looking for...variety and favorites! Anything from Flamenco guitar to Santana .
Thanks, Janette!

Cinco de Mayo is not a Dominican thing either. What kind of music are you looking for? There is a Dominican by the name of Juan Luis Guerra that has beautiful music. You can get his CDs atamazon YOu might be able to listen to a sample...
The typical Dominican music is merengue. Merengue is more of a dancing music than a listening music. And sometimes the words are not appropriate... Do you speak Spanish?
I wonder if you can go to the internet and listen to music from Mexico like Mariachi music or something like that. Mariachi is what I think of when I think of Mexican folk music.

Check out the Putumayo label. They have GREAT tunes, lots from Latin America. Some of the titles that come to mind are "Latin Groove", "Latino, Latino", "Nuevo Latino","Latin Playground" (which I just ordered) and Cubanismo. I have Cubanismo, a couple of their Salsa cds and Cajun music, enjoy each and everyone of them, and LOVE their cd "Brasileiro". It's all fun, toe-tapping, danc-y music. As someone mentioned, you sometimes get inappropriate language on Latin cds (on ANY cds!)but even if your kids know Spanish, it's often hard to discern exactly what they're saying. That being said, I haven't heard anything egregious on these cds at all, just eternal themes of love and lamentation,your-cheatin'-heart, that sort of thing.
We played a bunch of these Putumayo cds at our homeschoolers Mardi Gras party and EVERYONE commented on the great tunes. We've played them a lot since Mardi Gras, too.

Thanks for reminding me about this label, Kelly! Some time ago, I was posed to make some purchases of Putumayo but stopped when I became overwhelmed with the huge selection...dropped the ball and never picked it up again . I just found some at overstock.com at decent prices.
Love,
