Two questions:
I have a Macbook with a burned out screen. I know I should be able to hook it up to a monitor somehow. Any kind of monitor? How does that work?
And does iCal come preloaded on Macs or do you have to purchase it separately?
Wishing I could combine certain PC AND Mac characteristics together into the perfect computer...

I'm dying to get to your question, Angela....'cause you know how I love my mac and all things mac-nifty and especially my iCal!
...very quickly....YES! iCal comes standard on a mac! I just upgraded to the newest operating system and iCal has been updated and I can't wait to dig into it for this year's lesson plans!
...and YES! you can hook up your macbook to a monitor...if someone doesn't get to this question before I get back, I'll be back on later tonight and I can give more details.

I just read back through your old tutorial, Jen, and am anxious for you to tell me how I can get my Mac set up again! To be honest, the mouse, etc. drove me crazy enough that when the screen burned out Andy bought me a Dell. But I liked Word for Mac better, and I also liked how it didn't crash. And I have stuff on that Mac I need now. And we could use another computer for kids to use. So the Mac needs to be reabilitated... and I need to get to work on making a good place for it...

Look on the left side of your macbook, Angela...do you see all those little pluggy-ports (please, do not feel intimidated by my firm grasp of technological terminology!) My keyboard port is 3rd from the left when looking at them, but yours may be different - you're looking for the little port that has a square with two lines on either side of the square. Plug your monitor directly into that port...fire up the macbook...that should do it!

I was playing with it this weekend, Angela. I built some summer plans very quickly. It's pretty easy to work with. I'll post an updated tutorial on my blog probably...after baseball season.
...hope you get your monitor hooked up to your laptop soon!

I'm really interested in using ical too. We just went back to a Mac after 8 years on a PC and are so very happy. Does anyone use ical for long term lesson planning, like monthly?

I build all of my lesson plans in iCal. I just built summer plans for the children over the weekend, and over the summer, I'll be building our entire year in iCal. It is very workable, and can be tweaked each week as you go. I build the year over the summer and then print one week at a time throughout the year. We live the week and I reflect on any changes that need to be made on iCal. I easily make the changes and then print again the following week. It helped me soooo much with time management and juggling last year.
I like that the new iCal (that comes with Leopard) allows me to attach files and links to my lesson plans now. So, for example, if I'm building a lesson block that focuses on a study of Botany and I have something I've made that can be printed as a tool to help with classification and identification, I can just attach it. Likewise, I can attach links to specific websites and blogs that offer crafts or great supplemental information to support a lesson.
Also, building and layering calendars is a wonderful organizational tool. Last year, I built Sarah's confirmation plans in a separate calendar, same with my liturgical year plans, etc. Then, for printing and viewing, I just layered the calendars/plans I needed. It was nice that they were all color coded so that I could see what was what. This is also helpful in survival schooling. I build basic plans in my "rhythm of the day" calendar. If crisis strikes, I know that printing and accomplishing that one set of plans gets us through the 3R's with nothing extra.

This sounds quite helpful, actually. I mean, if I could get myself together to that extent!  Can you update iCal without getting a whole operating system update, though? My mac is a couple of years old.
My VGA adapter is ordered and on the way, so I'm hopeful that I'll be able to set up some sort of summer schedule soon. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to make the schedule in Excel again for summer. (Not that we're slavish to a schedule, especially in the summer time. But with the changing seasons our rhythm changes, and I find that I need some sort of guideline to follow just so I'm not always running around feeling flustered and as if I should be doing something else.)

No, I don't think so. I tried. iCal comes with the operating system - so an upgrade to Leopard would be the only way to get the updated iCal. It was worth it to me. iCal is still not without some bugs (it's really a beta version of their software, but they continue to upgrade it and work out kinks), and I faced down a few of them last year. I wanted their update...and I wanted some of the newer features offered in Leopard. I've been really pleased. You can certainly work with iCal in the older operating systems though.

This is exactly why I set up a summer rhythm here!!! Exactly!! The kids were going bonkers, and truthfully, I need something written to keep me accountable and not feeling overwhelmed with everything. There's not much there, but I did set a very gentle rhythm that includes time for reading, a little math, and some art or science/nature study time. There's plenty of time for play and exploration as well. Already today, it has been helpful. My kids naturally and easily settle into a rhythm - it's not far from the one we usually keep during the school year. It's very settling for them and for me....and now, I better go live it!
