I have had this sinus infection since the beginning of lent!

Here's what I have tried:
-extra vit.C /plus multi-vitamin
-vicks vapor rub
-hot pack
-hot tea
-hot/spicy soups
-homeopathic remedies
-over the counter stuff like benadryl
-saline solution squirt bottle
-2 different antibiotics

I am trying something like a netti pot now. However, my right nostril is sooooo plugged that nothing will drain out of it. Anything poured in comes right back out the same nostril or goes down my throat which is....nasty

Does anyone have any suggestions?? Do I just keep trying? Or should I go back for a third antibiotic?? The first one didn't work and the last one made me worse (headache, severe stuffiness, earache, ears plugged, going to the bathroom every hour and a half day and night) I had to stop taking it to feel better

I'm going out of town for the weekend and had hoped to feel better by now. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Jody

well let's see.. what haven't you tried?

Chiropractic adjustment?

garlic?
ginger?(if you're not pregnant)
goldenseal? (also if not pregnant)
yarrow? (I think this is also not recommended in pregnancy but it was hard to find info on)

Eucalyptus essential oil can help.. I like putting it on a hankie and keeping it close to my face.. but on occation I have dabbed it under my nose.

Hot or cold packs.. a lot of time I find that the congestion is swollen tissue and cold actually helps open things up more than heat will.. it reduces swelling.

And on that note.. pineapple (bromelain) would also help as will the ginger mentioned above.

My ds has had the same problem since Christmas. But I think we have a miracle. We have been using Sinusin and Ocean nasal sprays. I also bought some Tea Tree oil and mixed it with water and sprayed anything that could not be washed in hot hot water. (bedding, stuffed animals, curtains, carpets, etc) I sprayed everyday and also burned some tea tree in my difuser. He seems fine.
I will pray this will help you too! And ask you to keep us in your prayers!

I second the cold packs. Actually, I alternate with hot and cold. It sure seems to help.

Do you have any allergies that could be keeping this from healing? My 18yods has had this problems for the past few months, too, and his allergies don't help.

I would also probably be back at the doctor.

Praying for you! Sinus headaches are horrible!

God Bless,

My thought, too, was allergies. Those would need to be treated to deal with the other symptoms.

I'm sorry you're suffering. Sinus problems are awful.

Steam might help. My grandmother would bring the tea kettle to a boil. Meanwhile, gather a towel, a mason jar and a small brown paper bag (packed lunch size) with one corner of the bottom snipped off. Fill the jar with the boiling water. Immediately cover with the paper bag. You stick your nose into the hole, I find it helpful to wrap the towel around your hands and hold the jar still.   It sounds absurd. Works well. After you've got it cleared, add a pinch of baking soda to your neti pot fluid.
Good luck, Mcchatty

Hello Jody, I talked to you at the Children of Mary Homeschooling Conference in East Aurora and ordered some kits from you.
I've used Oil of Oregano (Oreganol P 73) and cut out dairy, wheat, and nuts with success. Another option would be Colloidal Silver, although some people say you shouldn't use it. To keep sinus infections away, you could try the German herbal remedy "Sinupret." It's quite effective. I hope you will be feeling better soon.

My husband gets sinus infections a lot and he finds relief when using a Neti-pot. I imagine it would be hard to get used to - I've never tried it, but he swears by it. I've also heard that cutting out dairy and gluten will help. My ds had "asthma" and when we cut those things out of his diet it went away (so I'm not sure it was actually asthma in the first place.)

The neti pot works but sometimes I am so stuffed that like you said it's hard to get anything up there. What i have found helpful is to use nasal spray (like Afrin) to get things to open up a bit and then flush like crazy with the neti pot.

Also since you are taking those antibiotics I would highly recommend some probiotics. Those good bacteria can be really helpful. One place I read even recommended put probiotics in the neti pot to get them up them to fight the bad bacteria. Not a bad idea actually.

I hope you get some relief soon!

Thank you all so much, ladies!!!!

Jodie-your ideas are great. I'm starting with the hot and cold packs today!

Sunny-It is somewhat comforting to know that someone else has this crazy sinus thing too! You know, I think I do have tea tree oil around here somewhere. Now if I can only find it. That spraying idea sounds good.

Stacy and Tami-You know, I do have allergies, at least I used too. They have not bothered me much in the past couple of years though. But you're right they could be compounding the problem.

Mcchatty- Steam has been helping!! Can you tell me why baking soda in the neti pot?

Eva-Hi! Great to talk with you again and thanks for all the good advice! Do you happen to know who sells "Sinupret"? I've heard that is really helpful.

Becky and Michele-I think I'm not using the Neti pot enough--and the probiotics are a must for me. How could I have forgotten that???

Thank you everyone for all your helpful ideas and prayers! I'm praying for all of you too!

Jody

Your local health food store might carry Sinupret. If not, try Vitacost -- we use them a lot:
Vitacost.

Okay, this is not for the squeamish. When my sinuses get really clogged I actually lay down and let the sinus spray drip into my sinuses until it feels full. Then I will roll over on one side and then the other so that all that saline solution has time to unblock the sinus cavity. If it is the upper sinus, I will hang my head over the bed upside down. Hope that's clear.

Thanks hsmom, I have been laying down to let the sinus spray work. Then when things get somewhat clear I use the Neti Pot. I've never tried hanging my head over the bed but will try.

I have been feeling much better, Praise God. I think I'm finally on the mend. Thank you all very very much!

Sorry, this took so long-
The baking soda is to correct the ph of your sinuses. It really works!!! When they get inflamed they become acidic, correcting the ph helps your body to heal itself. - My source on this is an MD, who is not typically open to anything non traditionally western. He's a surgeon for pete's sake!
So glad the steam helps..

I have the perfect solution, at least it works for me and I just posted it in the ear infection post Stef wrote a moment ago.

Sounds quacky but it always works for me. Be aware that anything you try "naturally" takes longer than a drug/prescription, that's for sure.

I use oil of oregano (joy of the mountain brand which is already cut with olive oil) and rub it externally (!) along my sinus from upper nose area under the inner eye area (not too close to eyes but sinus is up there too), down to the outer nostrils and all the way out to the ears. Rub well in small circles to get the best from the oil seeping in the pores. I've also used a dab on the end of a q-tip and guided it ever gently up my hose just to breath in and out several times. Within 15 minutes or so, you will blow and blow ALOT. Reapply as often as you need to until you feel relief. This allows you to get a good night's sleep, believe me.

We use this method on all our allergy sufferers, and most here are known to get sinus infections every year, that is until I armed myself with this liquid gold. We also use nasal spray laced (grin) with a drop of tea tree oil in the mix - lift lid and add it into it and be sure the liquid isn't just a cleaner but also has grapefruit in it) to use. In a bad case situation use it as often as necessary to get relief.

My husband was told since he had a few upper teeth pulled as a child, his roots dipped in a bit and sinus infections often occurred for him to back up things because they got trapped in those dips. The nasal sprays help alot, the Nettie pot not so much if infection is already present because the warm steam brings bacteria symptoms on worse for some reason. ??

I just love oil of oregano though. So I smell like an Italian descendant, big deal. :-)

Hope all is well soon.
