On Monday, I ordered a dress for Karoline to wear in colonial Williamsburg. It came today, which is amazing. It smells like smoke, which is  . I've never had to return anything via Etsy before and I'm sad I have to send this back but I don't want to even try to wash it, in case it doesn't work and then I can't send it back. Anybody have Etsy experience with smoke-smelling items or items you needed to return?
Any suggestions on where to get a similar dress ASAP? The trip is in two weeks.

...this is just me....but I'd keep it if you really like the dress. This is probably influenced by my proximity to these kinds of resources though - which is to say, I'm not close. So, I'd try to wash it and keep it because it would be difficult to find another and replace it - you're closer resources. Can you check with the Williamsburg gift shop?) I think you can probably wash the smell out of it with baking soda washes (might just take running it through several washes) and then I'd try some vinegar rinses and some sunshine drying time on the line.
Can you communicate with the Etsy seller and ask them the smoking status of their home, tell them that should have been clarified clearly on their site, and request assurance that you can return the dress if it doesn't wash out?

In my experience, smoke washes out fairly easily from clothes.

I like Jennifer's idea.. contact the seller, let them know that you're willing to attempt to wash out the smoke smell if they will still accept it as a return if it doesn't wash out sufficiently and that it should be clear on their site about the smoke in the atmosphere.
I usually find you need some sort of degreasing agent to get smoke out, not just a deodorizer.
I might try washing with Dawn dish soap for instance and rinsing with vinegar (that will help the soap rinse out)

You can wash the smoke smell out of clothes with regular laundry detergent. We have to do this with all the clothes we bring when we stay at my mil's house, and also with any clothes we receive from her. They all smell like smoke, but with a wash in a smoke-free home, they're fine.

Yep...I would say you can wash it out too. When we go bowling...yuck...we all change immediately!
If you do return. let us know how it goes...there are some things on etsy I haven't bought yet, still pondering, because I'm concerned about a need to return.

As an ex-smoker (I was 14-15 yo), I used to toss my clothes in the dryer with a dryer sheet to freshen them. It has been a while, but it might be a less harmful, quick fix or attempt.

Or even washing it and putting it out on the line on a breezy day might help.
But I see what you want is etsy advice (I have none) and not laundering advice (I have too much)!

 the smoke I deal with is pretty heavy duty.. I couldn't remember if cigarette smoke was as bad as the smoke/soot/diesel/gas my dh wears when fighting fire (or doing control burns)

If you have your heart set on returning the outfit, colonial Williamsburg does sell cute period clothing for children. We outfitted our girls when we went there this past summer.
