Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any good book recommendations or articles to read that would present a clear case as to why the world is not overpopulated?? I'm posting it here in Living Faith because I would prefer that the argument be given from a Catholic point of view.. I need to dismantle the overpopulation ideas that my daughter picked up by reading   The Time Quartet by Madeleine L'Engle... I knew I should have thought twice before letting her read a lot of those L'Engle books...Why, oh why, didn't I listen to Michael O'Brien??? This child is impossible to pre-read for, she can read upwards of 2 books per day if she has enough free time....I try my best to discern if a book is acceptable, but I messed up this time...

Dear Jennifer,
Don't beat yourself up. Take it as a teachable moment of how the majority of people have bought into the overpopulation myth.
Start with the Population Research Institute.

I just went to Catholic Exchange and typed "overpopulation myth" in the search box and it gave 5 links to articles. This one looked especially good! Too Many People?

God Bless!

Jennifer,

You are going to teach your daughter how to discern and look for the truth in information. If more mothers did this...we wouldn't have all these myths and notions being wildly accepted and believed by intelligent people all over the planet.

My hat it off to you...I wish I was a better thinker and problem solver.

Can't remember the author off the top of my head, but there is actually a book called "The Over-Population Myth". It's written by a scientist and he explains that not only is it not true, but believing it actually HURTS society and the world around us. I found it interesting a couple years ago.

Bit confused about the reference to L'Engle though... where is there a problem on this topic in the book? The girl grows up to marry the boy. He becomes a marine biologist and she helps him with his research. They seem to have a good marriage with 6 children. Now, their dd goes to spend some time with the grandparents and experiences her own bit of adventure. During her stay it seems grandma is a bit bitter that her dd didn't follow in her career footsteps and instead chose to be a SAHM to 6 children. Not sure if that is neccessarily over-pop though???

Thank you Kristina, MaryBeth, and Martha!

I will research the links and dd and I will have a fruitful discussion...she is quite enamored with L'Engle right now and is reading through all her children's books faster than I can keep up with...it's time to slow down...

Martha, my dd is the one who mentioned The Time Quartet as a book that L'Engle uses to talk about overpopulation...I didn't get into specifics with her...though dd did say that L'Engle also mentions how great big families are...I am going to read the book over the rest of Christmas break so I can know what I am dealing with...I'll get back to you!

Thanks again, ladies!

Janet Smith talks about this on her tape Contraception Why not? which I believe you can get through ccli.org. Also, take her on a drive through northern Texas. As we drove cross country this summer in our new 15 passsenger van, my husband and I were laughing about the idea of over population.

Don't have much time here on my dad's connection. I like this article from Catholics United for the Faith - it's a concise yet thorough presentation of the topic - Debunking the Overpopulation Myth

Jennifer,

I agree. Don't beat yourself up. This job we have is HARD! It's NOT easy!

God will use this to help you and your daughter research this topic, and that will be a good thing.

There are times something comes out of my children's mouths that make me stop, and wonder, *Now WHERE did you hear that from?* They're bombarded today anyway with SO many things! We need to keep up with them, and discuss, and challenge, and teach, with love and charity. You are doing just that!
