The new issue is up on the web! Here's an excerpt:
A group of students and I were once exploring some ruins. These were not ancient ruins, which are so often admired as monuments to the achievements of man, but recent ruins of maybe some 60 years, true monuments to the power of nature. These were still recognizably greenhouses, but the glass was long gone, and vines crawled up the sides and around the empty window frames. A single mature tree grew out of the middle of one of the long, low buildings, spreading its branches well beyond the limits of the former roof, while younger trees pushed their way through the floor, past potting tables, over long abandoned seedling trays, and reached for sunlight. The remains of the roofline dipped, mirroring the ground below...

MacBeth, this is priceless! I can't wait to read it to my kids in the morning. I fear we may have to revisit our owl studies and include all your fun stuff. We just love nature study, and how cool is it that we have you to provide us non-scientist types with all these goodies. Three cheers for the owl page
With much gratitude,
Love, Meredith

Exactly what I thought. We have accepted that the topic of birds is always on our study list .
Thanks so much, MacBeth!

Angie, it's always on ours too! We have had so many of our little critters returning already to our area (mid to Soutern Idaho) and they are so fun to watch. We've had redwing blackbird males fighting over our nearly empty feeder and puffing themselves up to show their beautiful red and yellow patches, a beautiful little pair of house finches that nested in one of our nobles is back, I hope they use their same nest, and we've had these funny horned larks going after all the dried weed seeds (probably thistle or alfalfa) in little packs, or should I say flocks?
Our favorite bird book right now of course is the Thomas Burgess Bird Book. I think we'll start making our own *field guides* ala CCM style (thanks to someone on the list, I'm sorry I can't remeber WHOO?)
Let's update each other on how we're using MacBeth's fun Wild Monthly with our kids, we could start a little online co-op for them to share their findings and ideas, maybe even pictures!! What do you think??
Have a HOOT of a day!

Heheh. This is a great idea.
Here's a link that Kathleen on SI sent to me as a fine (local) example of nature reconquering man-made efforts: Mariner's Marsh .

Great link MacBeth, my kids enjoyed this too, as well as your new Wild Monthly. We'll keep everyone posted on what else we discover. Now I just need to find some big pinecones to make those cute little fluffy owls

Careful planning went into our honeymoon in Mexico. My husband and I wanted spend time visiting Mayan ruins rather than partying in nightclubs in Cancun. We visited Coba, which boasts the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan, Nohoch Mul. We visited Tulum, the city by the sea, which boasts the “descending god” images that have delighted those interested in extraterrestrials and so-called “ancient astronauts.” We also visited a small area of ruins near Cancun called El Rey...

Oh MacBeth, wouldn't you know. I actually think Mousey Trails is even better. We are still following ours all over the yard!! I haven't tried posting again on the blog, is there any status change, or do we still need to sign up? TIA for the info.

The new issue is out! Here's a bit of it:
Before my father-in-law passed away, he took my two oldest children on a visit to see their cousin in England. I gave them a list of things I thought the children would enjoy seeing, and I included feeding the pigeons in Trafalgar Square. At the time, one could purchase a bag of food (at a price higher than “tuppence” a bag) and feed the feral pigeon population. Libby and Trip were 6 and 4 respectively, and were overwhelmed by the pigeons, which not only ate the pigeon food, but also grabbed Trip’s lunch, and tangled themselves in Libby’s hair. Instead of having a Mary Poppins moment, the children were a bit frightened...and Trip was left hungry...

When I was about ten years old, I considered myself an expert on snakes. Despite my inner-city upbringing, I knew all I thought I needed to know. I knew they were reptiles, I knew they had no legs, they moved along the ground, they had fangs, and some were quite dangerous. I was determined to catch one, and though I lived in the city, our frequent visits to the homes of friends in more rural areas provided ample snake-hunting opportunities...

MacBeth, this is great! When I was growing up the most impressive thing my father had in his *den* was a rattlesnake skin with the rattle still attached. I thought it was so cool, and now here we are living in rattlesnake haven and I'm happy to report that I have NOT encountered one yet here in Idaho. Apparently there are also "bull" snakes and thankfully haven't seen one of these either.
Thanks for another great Wild Monthly.
Cheers

Just loved it, MacBeth! Reminded me of the few (and thankfully, harmless) snake incidences we've had! We do have cottonmouths in the creek close to our house, but thankfully we haven't had any in our yard (though neighbors have).

As usual, very enjoyable. But I guess as a squeamish city gal, I don't understand why would one want to catch them in the first place? Even the harmless, your description makes me think I'll just look, but don't touch.
Thanks for the great Monthly reading!

LOL...I was never a tomboy. I was a tomboy wanna-be for a long time, but couldn't shake the feminine squeamies. That would explain the lack of understanding of WHY catch them in the first place!

I never would have caught snakes when I was a kid, but I have caught a few garter snakes as an adult (for the kids because they want one but won't catch them!) They think I'm really brave. The things we moms do for our kids.

And all my personal encounters with rattle snakes came when I was living in Idaho, Meredith.
