Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am wondering how those of you who have dieted deal with eating differently from your family. If you are doing something like Weight Watchers, do you cook separately for yourself or try to just eat less of what everyone is eating, or does the whole family eat what you eat?

Sometimes I think it would be so convenient to just order Nutri-System meals and not have to think about what I am eating, but who can afford that?!

When I lost a ton of weight last year, I did it by eating a half plate full of salad greens (plain or with lite dressing) before eating anything else. Then, I'd try to have a "cleaner" version of whatever they were eating. If that wasn't possible, I'd just have a smaller portion.

BTW, I can't recommend the book "Cleaning Eating" by Tosca Reno enough. It was great for me as a visual learner.

HTH!

I did really well on Weight Watchers years ago (I really need to go back again)
The idea with Weight Watchers is that you are eating real food, in real situations- ideally you'll just make better choices. I found their recipes to be very family friendly so everyone ate what I was eating for dinner. I watched my portions and adjusted where necessary- for example if I made fried salmon cakes, I'd stick mine under the broiler instead... even though they taste better fried    and I'd eat a slice of bread without butter or lower point dressing on my salad.

I ate what the family ate except in changed proportions -- say they were having stirfry I'd have the biggest proportion of vegetables, some meat and just a little of rice or noodles or whatever the carb was. I'd avoid deep-fries and that kind of thing altogether.

It wouldn't work for my family to change their diet to match mine because they are almost all very skinny boys.

I did a lot of research and it seemed to indicate that the best way to change habits for life was not to deprive yourself of normal food, just eat much less of the things that cause your body problems (deep fries and carbs for me) and increase the veggies.

Of course if a danger food is really a near occasion of sin it's better not to have it around so I avoid stocking certain triggers -- they differ for different people but most of mine start with CHOCO-   I usually have a couple bars of Hershey's around because I can eat just a square or two of that and sometimes my daughter and I really need that square or two.
