Would anyone care to play devil's advocate for me regarding induction for being significantly overdue?

All of my babies have been born between 41 and 43 weeks and all arrived reasonably easily and were perfectly healthy. So I am content and my midwives are content to wait it out doing only NSTs every 3 or 4 days past 41 weeks, BUT because of insurance regulations if I go past 42 weeks I must deliver at a hospital rather than the birth center.

I can still be attended by the same midwife, but obviously a hospital is a different environment so my midwives have suggested either a prostaglandin induction or amniotomy at 41 weeks 6 days (which will be this Friday) in order to increase the chance that I can deliver at the birth center.

Doing either procedure, neither of which is without risk, not because there is any actual problem but just because the insurance company thinks that all babies should be born before 42 weeks, seems like bad medicine to me. But I haven't ever delivered in a hopsital so maybe I underestimate how much of a negative that would be?

Are there hospital policies that override the choices you'd have at the birth center?

That would be the only thing I could think of.. hmm types of beds? (I hate hospital beds.. they're way to high for my comfort )

Are you restricted in labor? (staying in bed? staying in the room? internal monitor? constant external monitor? iv?) do they have tubs or showers to use if you'd want to use one at the birthing center? obviously if you don't want to use them then it makes no difference. Policies on new baby? rooming in? observation? how long would you have to stay?

Sara, I'm praying for you. my non induced babies have been up to 14 days "late".
I know my Dr's/midwives were leery of prostaglandin gel inductions, because there is no way to halt a bad/violent reaction to it.
I've done the membrane stripping, my Dr/midwife would not do the rupture to induce either- they advised against the pain of a dry labor.
have you ever tried castor oil/other things at home?

With my second I tried a whole slew of things - castor oil, accupuncture, membrane stripping - and none of them produced any contractions at all, but all the fuss was tiring and stressful. So now I just do the more normal things that are supposed help get labor started (walking, nursing, romance ) and trust that baby will be born when baby is ready to be born. If only the insurance people took the same view . . .
