Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So here we are, about 70 pages from the end of Caddie Woodlawn, and we run into a poem that Caddie had to recite. They only give you the first few lines in the book. Despite having several children's anthologies, we'd never run into this one before. By searching online, I found that the author was Charles MacKay, a British man living in the 1800s, and the poem is titled Song of Life but I'm having a devil of a time finding the poem bound into a book. It's a lovely poem. I'd love to see some gifted illlustrator's work next to it. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Well, I haven't found the poem in a picture book yet, but I have found it in an anthology. It's in what looks like a really nice 1904 book called Poems Every Child Should Know (from the The What-Every-Child-Should-Know-Library) edited by Mary E. Burt. You can find it used by searching the title at bookfinder.com (don't put in the editor name because not everyone lists it with her name).

Also, it is free (e-book) at Project Gutenberg. (Even the pictures from the original book appear here!)

It's also available as a reprint at Amazon(more expensive than 1904 book)

(It might help your search to know that I have found people calling the poem "Consequences" and "Small Beginnings".)

From the intro of the anthology:

Is this another collection of stupid poems that children cannot use? Will they look hopelessly through this volume for poems that suit them? Will they say despairingly, "This is too long," and "That is too hard," and "I don't like that because it is not interesting"? Are there three or four pleasing poems and are all the rest put in to fill up the book? Nay, verily! The poems in this collection are those that children love. With the exception of seven, they are short enough for children to commit to memory without wearying themselves or losing interest in the poem.

Looks fun!

Thanks for starting me on this rabbit trail,
