Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was hoping to talk to some of you who DO file under a religious exemption, particularly if you have filed in Prince William County.

Like Elizabeth said in an earlier post originally I didn't think religion was the reason I homeschooled but after this year of searching and discerning I now KNOW that it is.

My concern is that when my children were in public school I had a bit of an antagonistic relationship with the school board over the math program so I am afraid they will remember me and deny our application on that basis. Therefore I need a rock solid RE application.

I would be so grateful if those of you have filed an RE application would share with me the religious citations you used. I am already planning on using the catechism and some information I've gathered from previous threads on this topic. Thanks!

I did a RE with Prince William county back in September 2008 and it was finally granted ok on Oct 1st (feast of St. Therese!) My packet was quite extensive ... they may have needed the month to read thru it all .

My suggestion to you is to ask HSLDA for advice (if you're not a member, signup -- it's worth the $9/month insurance!)... they'll vet the letter and let you know what the County can and cannot require. Remember that you don't want to "dis" public education, but rather stress how you feel called to homeschool.

Let me know if you have any other questions ....

I was just getting ready to update our religious exemption. The letter I have granting permission lists Michael (and he's graduated now), but it doesn't list the last five of my children . You only have to apply for RE once, but I do need acknowledgment of the other kids for my records.

Anyway, I just had a thought: does using a community college for dual enrollment credit negate your eligibility for RE? I know a family can't claim RE if any children are enrolled in a public school K-12...

I don't mean to hijack your thread Becky, but it fit under this topic.

I am waiting for a call back from HSLDA - we are thinking of switching to the religious exemption. Just wondering - does taking the RE mean that if for any reason our children had to go to school we would not be able to send them in the future?

Also - what is the major difference between RE and what we do - just a case of not sending in notice of intent and annual tests?

Do you think we will be more protected with RE if our current govt changes homeschooling laws?

I asked Scott Woodruff, a lawyer for HSLDA, about this at the Northern Virginia Home Education Conference and he said that you can send them in the future if you need to you just probably won't ever get another RE again.

As to your last question....I wanted so badly to ask him that but I didn't want to sound like a whacko alarmist.    Seriously though that is one of my considerations in filing for an RE, I truly feel like if they decide to severely limit homeschooling those with an RE will have the Constitution on their side. I'd be curious to see other thoughts on this.

If I recall correctly, the most recent changes in Virginia homeschooling laws have increased freedom, not lessened it. I found myself wondering whether if the laws were to become more restrictive, might it be part of an overall turn of the political tide against the traditional family and traditionally religious people (there's that "not wanting to sound like a whacko alarmist" thing again) and might that not lead to the "religious exemptions" being scrutinized more intensely and challenged more often?

I haven't used the RE myself but have thought about it, just have a lot of questions about what it really covers.
