Our almost 8yo ds is right on that hump when it comes to reading.

Today, I was listening to him read a book from the A-Z Mysteries, and felt somewhat stuck in helping him.

He loves to be read to more than doing the reading himself. Having said that...he attacks words very well, and amazes me with his comprehension. However, fluency is just not there. He rarely pauses after a punctuation mark, between paragraphs, doesn't use emphasis of conversation w/i quotation marks,etc..

It's been a few years since I have had a blooming reader! Is there anything I should be doing-or not doing? Should I just keep reading aloud, while encouraging him to read aloud, and ride this phase out?

Thank you, for any words of encouragement!

I have an almost 9 year old with similar situation so thought I'd bump this up in hopes of someone giving answers. Well, actually my DS (almost 9) doesn't really attack words that well or have much comprehension b/c he struggles so much to just get thru the words it takes much effort.

I was thinking about continuing on some basic phonics skills with my son as he starts 3rd grade next year. ?

I have had several "late" readers by school standards. My 8 year old is struggling. She loves for me to read to her, which I try to do a lot. I would say to read a lot to him and try not to push and worry. Easier said than done. I have to remind myself that a lot.
Kathryn, I had a ds who didn't read until he was 10. It was a struggle for both of us, but he did read. I would continue some basic phonics but try to keep it light and fun. If you see him getting upset, put it away for a while. Reading should be enjoyable.

Thanks, Lisa!

I have increased the read alouds, and insist that he sits next to me, as I do the finger under the word thing-just for one whole page. He is agreeing to that, and we're still just plugging away.

I have seen him pick books up on his own free will, a lot more than he used to. It is so hard to listen sometimes, but I do take your advice-and of others-and remember that this too shall pass.

reading to himself is probably easier than reading out loud.. and learning to follow punctuation when reading generally needs to wait until the words aren't taking quite so much concentration.

I've found a great book to read aloud when learning the pauses and how to say the words is... How the Grinch Stole Christmas.. if you've seen/listened to the orginal cartoon special.. Boris Karloff's reading is so expressive.. and once you have that in your head.. it's easy to copy him while reading yourself.. i do it.. and I discovered quite by acident that my oldest would do that as well.

Is there any other way to read How the Grinch stole Christmas?! I find myself naturally using Boris Karloff's pauses and inflections when reading it to my children.

We have found Great Leaps to be an incredible fluency program & well worth the $99 price tag. Oddly enough, I have several friends with children who struggle with fluency issues & we've been able to share the program. It's amazing what 3 minutes/day of timed reading can do.

hth!

I have a book about reading (would have to pull it out and check the title) but anyway it recommends, for fluency, to read a paragraph to your child aloud, then read it together, and then have him read it aloud. (To, with, by) This helps the child hear the correct phrasing, punctuation, etc.

Karen T.   that sounds like a suggestion from Reading Rescue 1-2-3 ... which is a great book for helping with reading fluency once the phonics are down ....

Yes, Mary, that's it! I kept trying to write Reading Reflex and I knew that wasn't it.
