What do you use? I just bought some at Whole Foods (don't have the bottle in front of me), $3.99 for 12oz (regularly $7.99) I am trying to avoid all the bad additives, but we're a family of 8...5 of us girls!

Have you seen this site: Skin Deep?
There are cheap supermarket/drugstore brands that don't have iffy ingredients and as well as expensive 'natural' ones that do so it's worth checking out specific products before you buy them.

Ooh I can say yes!!! My dd is right at this minute typing up our list of homemade cosmetics to make - so we can place our orders for herbs, oils and bottles. When she is done I will send you the recipe/s that we use. (probably tonight as I am on my way out)
If you check out the "herbs" category on my blog you may find a link to a couple of recipes there.
What am I ordering as a stand by is Dr. Bronners Baby Castile soap - I have heard it is good as a shampoo

I stopped using shampoo a couple of years ago and just scrub with water. Once your scalp adjusts to not having the oil stripped every day, it stops over producing. So, when you first stop, your hair gets oily fast, but eventually, you don't even have to scrub with water every day. Sometimes I only need to wash 1-2 times a week (though, sometimes its more often than that just because I find a full, hot shower relaxing rather than using a shower cap).
I know it sounds crazy and the adjustment period is awkward, but no one here uses shampoo and that saves a ton of money

Thanks, Marilyn! I am really looking forward to your recipes. And Lindsay, you have explained something I have often wondered about...did people throughout history just have totally greasy hair until Breck shampoo was invented? (I wonder about some pretty strange stuff  ). But I guess their hair was just fine! Another product that we didn't need until we saw the ads....

yep, Lindsay, even if you use shampoo you can reduce the need for shampooing your hair to 2-4 times a week rather than every day.
But other things do effect it.. when I'm pregnant I can do the twice a week.. when not I really need 3-4 times a week.
And the type of climate you're in may effect it as well. I can't clean my hair without using conditioner, because the static get so out of hand. But when I lived in a moister climate that wasn't a problem at all.. and actually I had to mostly avoid conditioner.

Wow, Lindsay! Should we make you post a picture before we believe you? How long was the adjustment time? I guess I can see this working for adults, but what about little girls with long thick hair who like to do things like dip it in their syrup?

I would think you could use some soap on dirty syrup hair without scrubbing and stripping their scalp. Also, do they do it every day? Even cutting back to a couple of times a week (when its actually dirty like with mud or syrup) could still reduce consumption. I had cut back while using shampoo for some time (as Jodie described) before I took the plunge to no shampoo.

Yk, I don't even remember the adjustment because I just gradually stopped washing as often and then when I first gave up the shampoo, for a while I had to wash with water more often then I'd had to with shampoo for a while before I stretched it out again.
And Caroline, I remember being so annoyed watching the newest version of Pride and Prejudice with all their greasy hair and then the director in an interview saying how he wanted to make it more "realistic" since they couldn't wash their hair every day like we do. I was yelling at the screen "No, no, that's not how it works!!! They didn't all look like greaseballs all the time!"

I have to say, when Molly dared you to post a pic I was thinking the same thing!!!!! But, your hair is beautiful and it's so great to **see** you! I've cut way back on how often I wash - only twice a week - but I'm just not sure I could only do water...I have been really considering Trish's Saintly Soap Shampoo Bar and her Conditioner Bar as well! They sound lovely to me and like a much better alternative than what I'm currently using. Think I'll spend tonight shopping with Trish!

It does sound crazy, but like you said it does work. I washed only with conditioner for about a year - never could go to water only because of the frizz factor - and after about three or so weeks my scalp adjusted and was fine without the shampoo.
I confess now, though, that after that year I went back to shampoo. My waves just seemed to do much better with a teensy bit just on the scalp every wash.
But I can testify from personal experience that no shampoo definitely does work!
