I really need help deciding which level to choose for my 6 year old daughter.
She is going to enter 2nd grade next year, and I would love to do this program with her but I am not sure where to start.
She is currently working on Explode the Code 3, along with Little Stories for Little Folks and is finishing up the golden readers. She can read fairly well with no trouble in her grade level. That brings me to not really knowing which one to choose, whether it should be level 1 to just get her started in the program, or level 2 because Level 1 is going too be to easy.
I have never seen the actual inside of the book so I am not sure how it would end to go onto Level 2.
Any suggestions would be most apprecited.

I don't usually do spelling with a 2nd grader. Are you going to have her continue Explode the Code, because that can be used as a spelling program. If you want to do something gentle, I think CHC's spelling fits the bill.

I guess I hear many parents rave about this curriculum so I thought of getting it for her, and my soon to be 4th grade daughter.
What do you use for 4th graders, I know this is like totally off the title topic. But I am having the same dilema with her. I did not do any formal spelling with both of them this year so I thought of doing it this up coming year.

I love All About Spelling but I'm only using it with one of my sons who's had trouble learning to read and to spell. It's not a ton of work but there's an effort that I just won't make with my naturally good spellers. I have them use some phonics workbooks & spelling workbooks (for fun) in the early years then forget about it.
Recently I've had my older kids make sure they know how to spell the Wordly Wise lists of words just to make sure they're spelling well.

I think AAS is good for those who struggle with spelling but like Brenda said, I wouldn't use it on my good spellers because it is a bit teacher intensive. I would start with level 1 unless she has the first 30 or so phonograms memorized easily. She might be able to move quickly through level 1.

I think that my oldest is a natural speller. So I am wondering now if it would be a good match at all. And just wait on my 2nd grader.
Does anyone like Spelling Power I was interested in this also. I was thinking of just going this route. But AAS looks enticing and clean and crisp

I ignored spelling with my oldest, figuring he'd pick it up because he's a reader. Not so! So the rest of mine are doing spelling. We use CHC till the middle school years (I really love how gentle this program is), and then Wordly Wise with a spelling test on Fridays (I think they have great word choices). While I do value being able to spell correctly, its not a subject I want to spend a lot of time on, and I wouldn't want something teacher intensive, either. Its a subject that can be done quickly (no more than 15 min. a day) and independently, most of the time. That's why I sold my Spelling Power in favor of the other programs. It cannot be done without mom.

Claudia,
I just bought this for my currently 1st and 3rd graders. They both struggle with spelling but are good readers (at grade level). In all the material I found they recommend starting with Level one no matter what grade you are in because you are teaching a process as well as spelling.
BTW We just started today but the kids really liked the cards and the fact that spelling had no writing yet

My daughter wanted a step-by-step program for spelling. She likes a logical presentation of rules, and All About Spelling fits for her. I started her at age 6 in level 1, which she zoomed through quickly and is now working in level 2.

I use AAS as a phonics and spelling program for my 4.5yo. We love it! It uses fun, short, interactive lessons, which are great here. The teacher needs to interact with the student for the entire lesson, but it can be done in just 10-15 mintues a day. I plan to use it with all of my kids when they are ready.
Almost anyone beginning the program would need to start at level 1. You would probably go through this level very quickly with an older child, but it gives a foundation that your dc would not have gotten with most other programs.

I use AAS, and with DD - age 10 - who is a great speller, we started with Level 2. It quickly summarizes/reviews level 1 in the first step. We just spent a little time on that step and she was ready to go. In 9 months, she's finished levels 2, 3, and 4 and has noticeably improved her already good spelling skills. DS - age 8 1/2 - who is not such a natural speller, started midway through Level 1 and in 9 months has finished Level 1 and 2. He is improving a lot as well, just at his pace.
If you have any other AAS questions, please ask :)
God bless,
Christine

Just a follow up to my previous post. My DD almost 9 is flying through the lessons but really learning My DD almost 7 is going at a great pace as well but I now know where her gaps in phonics and spelling are.
I am so glad that I got this program on this forum's advice

I was fortunate enough to receive this curriculum to review from AAS. It is an excellent program!
The program/author recommends that you start ALL children at level 1. You may breeze through the first half of the book or maybe even most of it...but those foundational rules are important.
I found that with my 7 year old who is reading a few years ahead of her grade level, that we went through the first half of the book rather quickly, but by the end there were several new things we had not covered yet.
I agree that it is teacher intensive - at first, cutting out all the letter tiles, word cards, etc. But I have found it to NOT be very teacher intensive AFTER the initial time put in cutting things out. Just another thought...
