Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're thinking of doing this as it's one thing we have not had done with a pregnancy yet and I could use some cheering up!

Anyone here done this? Was it worth it?

I don't know what it costs but we had at least three done and they are amazing. My son looked exactly like himself at 37 weeks (two days before he was born!). However, if the baby doesn't cooperate, they can look really strange. Early on they got a picture of his foot and it was a perfect little foot-like a photo. My doc was a high-tech guy to begin with so these were routine. He never laid a finger on me-did everything through ultrasound-kind of different, huh? (Perinatologist) I can't remember how much our insurance covered. I would 1-find out how much you have to pay and if its reasonable then. . .2-get it close to term. You can see fat cheeks, sweet baby lips, eyes, . . . I fell in love with my baby. Also, we could then tell he was a boy, even though it was just his face, because he was so boyish looking. Dh took it to work and asked around and the majority thought--BOY! Of course, this wouldn't be for all cases. Twice he wouldn't cooperate with his face, so its kind of risky if you have to pay anyway. I wish I had a way to show you the picture. Maybe there's examples on-line.Keep us posted on what you decide.

I had one done with my last pregnancy, but it was not out of choice. I had many, many appts. with the perinatologist and he did many ultrasounds, including the 3-D. It was absolutely amazing! We didn't get a video of the ultrasound, but we have a still photo. I don't think I'd want to have to pay for it, though I am glad we were able to see his sweet little face before he was born.

The cost in my area is aobut $150 w/o insurance - I don't know if my insurance would cover it or not.

It's recommended to get it done around the 5th month because everything is pretty much formed (including the sex), but the baby is still small enough to get more of "whole" picture and see things clearer as it isn't so cramped in there yet.

That's probably true with going earlier-getting the whole picture. I guess I was thinking a more newborn look with later. My little one was such a squirmer around 5 mo.!

Martha,
I had a 3D ultrasound with Jacob at 31 weeks. It was the most amazing experience for me, to see him so very clearly. I have several pictures of him now from that ultrasound that I cherish. In one picture, his hands are folded as if he is praying. It's truely remarkable !!!

Hi Martha!

I guess I'm going to be the loner here and be the only one to say I'd pass on the 3D. Dh and I had our 1st one done with baby #4. It was unexpected and insurance covered it. I was expecting the cute little black and white photo to stick in the baby's scrapbook. When we arrived for our apptmt. (somewhere around 22-25 weeks) we had the 3D done and I don't know what I was expecting, maybe for the picture to look like a smiling baby waving at me from inside! Anyway, it was kind of neat to see the feet and hands but when we got around to the body and face, I had to turn away. I thought everything looked like bread dough and I couldn't stand the thought of a giant bread-baby in my belly! The pictures of our baby in my imagination were too beautiful to compare with what was on the screen. Pregnancy induced hysteria, I suppose.

I meant to come back here and throw in my .02 but it got a little crazy around here.

I had the 3&4-D done around 23 weeks and here's why I recommend it: I carried that little strip of pics around and showed them to everyone I possible could. I unraveled it at church, family gatherings, friends' houses, the store ,etc. Out of about a dozen photos there were only a couple where you could not see every single body part clearly .

There is absolutely no better excuse to show these amazing photos that the fact that this person is presently in your womb; and most people are totally surprised. It is not the same as showing fetal models or generic pictures in the womb because you are looking at the baby that is presently next to you! I also made sure I showed them to lots and lots of little children, who hopefully will have the memory of that image tucked away in their brains for years to come

I had one done at 39 weeks with Kate, and it was truly amazing. I cried, of course. She looked just like herself, and we marveled over seeing that incredible photograph of our sweetie before she was born.

Ours was free, as the sales rep had it set up in my OB's office for a week of demonstrations.
