I have not been able to find soft cotton receiving blanket for our little bundle of pink due to arrive soon. The ones I saw in BabiesRUS are rough flannel. My blue ones I have - which date back 10 years - are so soft and cuddly after hundreds and hundreds of washes and 4 boys who have used them. The labels are so worn on them that I cannot tell where they are from. I did get one pink Swaddle Me , but I am hoping to find a couple of soft receiving blankets to wrap the baby up in her car seat or stroller or when we are at soccer/baseball games.
Any ideas?

I really like the swaddling blanket. I have one for Lydia and it is soft and big -- it was great for swaddling when she was tiny, and is big enough for her to still use at almost 2. It's 42 x 42.

I never know what "receiving blankets" mean, but I'm very fond of the Gymboree cotton blankets. I use them for nursing, too. There are various sizes, so I usually try to get the larger ones. They are soft and wonderful.
Watch for sales, and ebay sells the discontinued lines if you don't like the current patterns.

I have one gymboree blanket I got at a second hand sale, and it was my favorite! It is cotton knit. Is that what you mean by cotton (my flannel blankets are "cotton" too).

Jenn and Lindsay - thank you! All the boys blankets are Gymboree - Abby found the labels!! After 10 years of use they still look new! I never go in there - too expensive and also in malls (and I dislike malls). I will have to see if they are having a sale or find some coupons.

Carter's also has those blankets and they are cheaper but just as soft.

Marilyn, I have to smile when I see your posts lately, because I could have written them myself. Must be a nesting thing  . I'm going to the mall (ugh!) tomorrow specifically to look at blankets at Gymboree. Parenting Magazine sent us a free trial issue for some reason and there was a 20% off coupon in it! You might be able to find one online somewhere. I also like to look at Children's Place and don't you know a 15% off coupon arrived in my mail yesterday! I can't stand the mall, but I figure I won't be there again for quite a while so it might just be fun  .
ETA: There is a Gymboree Outlet now at the Leesburg Premium Outlets, so if you are up for a little field trip you could try there. Gymboree cycles through their lines so frequently that the things in the outlet are still in season. The baby things are never on quite as good a sale as the bigger clothing, but considering they're never on sale in the regular store it's at least some break. Good luck!

Thanks Molly - I am gearing up the energy to go to the mall now - I think we go to same one near the airport. Did they have them in pink?

Ok Molly - we did not go to the same place. The only ones I saw were $27 - I have decided that baby girl is not getting one at that price!!
(and thank you to the sweet friend on this list who has got me one as a gift - Anna Grace will have this one and I will go through the boys ones and find the whitest one I can find. My MIL actually brought me a pink crib blanket - so little girl will sleep in pink!)

I have found a lot of nice receiving blankets at Goodwill. And also check consignment shops! Our 17 mo has to have a satin "silky" as we call it, to go to sleep, and I found 3 different ones at these two places.
Also these are nice gift ideas if anyone asks what you could use.
Congratulations on your precious baby girl. What a lovely name!

The softest receiving blankets we ever had were some made with organic Egyptian cotton. They were pricey (i was *very* hesitant!!) but they were softer than any other cotton I have ever felt. I can not rememeber the brand, but it was a natural / oragnic type online place, that also sold diapers.....

Marilyn, I will buy my Gymboree on Ebay: NWT only. (new with tags) I look for the ones that are rectangle shaped ($27 regular priced) and not square. Square is too small for swaddling the baby.

The best blankets I have ever used for swaddling my babies were some my sister in law made -- and all she did was use a serger on 36" squares of soft flannel that she bought from a fabric store. This is an inexpensive option and you get to pick your own fabric, but if you don't have a serger or know someone who does, then I guess it won't work.
I found that the flannel was warm but very breathable, and thin enough that it was easy to get a tight swaddle. The Gymboree blankets are beautiful but I had a hard time keeping the swaddle because of how thick they are.
