Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thank to many wonderful ladies, I now have a great list of picture books to go along with our Middle Ages unit.

Now I just wonder your opinions on which of these books to read aloud: Adam of the Road or The Door in the Wall.

This book will be aimed at my ds-9 but my dd's 13 and 15 listen also, along with dd-7, who seems to "get" all the read alouds we read as well as my ds-9 does.

Thanks for your opinions.

Our book club, which was equal parts boy and girl ranging in age from 9 to 13, read discussed Adam of the Road and it was enjoyed by everyone. We did it as a read aloud in our family and everyone under 9 enjoyed it too. You can read about how our book club explored this book in the first part of this post.

I have not yet read A Door in the Wall, but have heard good things about it too. Hope that helps some.

As a read-aloud I'd probably go with Adam of the Road.   I bet it will have interest for the olders and youngers as well as the 9 year old.   I remember Door in the Wall as being good too but slower in pace... but it's been years so it's possible my memories are off.

Just to throw in an opposite opinion . . . I prefer Door in the Wall. There is much more thematic stuff to discuss. You get a wider panoramic of middle ages in Adam of the Road, but . . . I wouldn't want to miss Door in the Wall. If you follow a wall far enough, you can find a door.
Can you do both?

I am thinking I might read Adam of the Road outloud and them get the Door in the Wall and play that on audio--I often "turn on a book"(as the kids say) at bedtime when the kids are tucked in.

Thanks for all the input!! You ladies are a great help!

Hands down Door in the Wall here- read it out loud 2 or three times already. It goes quickly and is so moving. A wonderful character building book (funny, my kids never got into Adam of the Road as much.)

I won't be much help deciding because we loved them both!
