We seem to go through our vacuums at a astounding rate. We're hard on them or we're getting inferior quality that wears out quickly. I need really good beater brush that will handle copious amounts of dog hair and lots of heavy use on carpets. My dc help and so it would be nice if it isn't overwhelmingly heavy - especially with lots of stairs.
Do you guys have any recommendations!

I'm interested in hearing opinions too...our vacuum cleaner just died on Saturday. Any opinions on Oreck?

consumer reports magazine and online always rates a Kenmore as being a top-rated "best buy".
I think now you can even purchase this same vacuum at K mart.
We are only on our 2nd vacuum in 16 1/2 years of marriage, and have never paid more than 149.00 for either of them.
surprisingly, Dirt Devil (or is it Eureka?) in the around 100 dollar range is always highly rated as well.
I've had experience with Rainbow and Oreck in my housecleaning days, and neither impressed me, except for the fact that Oreck was lightweight!

oh, there is a new pets-in-the-home vacuum that I think I saw at Target, initial reports are good for it.

OK - I love my Oreck -or should I say I love my Oreck repair shop. We used to go through vacuums on a yearly basis. I bought an Oreck over 7 years ago - still going strong. It came with a 21 year guarantee. I bring it to the shop when it breaks. They give me a loaner vac. For the most part, all the repairs have been under the warranty. With our frequent Army moves, we are always able to find a local Oreck shop.
It is super light, so no big deal to carry up and down the stairs - even for a small child.
I know they are never listed at the top of Consumer Reports - but if you are super hard on vacuums - it might be worth it just for the support of the shop.

I have had my Dyson for years and love it! It works well, we have had no problems, and I like that it is bagless. The visual reminder every time we vacuum of just what was on our floor is certainly motivating to vacuum more!
It is a little heavy, but my kids do the steps with the long hose.
We have two dogs in addition to the eight children so we have lots of vacuuming to do weekly.

I have a Royal and a Riccar

Both are made in America and very durable. My Royal is 13 years old and the only thing every done is a new belt every 6 months and a new power cord when it was yanked out of the wall. My Riccar is 5 years old and did need a new fan house but that was after I accidentally sucked up a bolt.
Royals are indestrucable but HEAVY. They are solid steel. Mine is in on the main floor while the Riccar is for the bedrooms. Royals will eat legos for breakfast 
Both have excellent warranties. My vaccum dealer/repair place will fix either one for just the cost of the parts for 20 years.

My DH wanted us to get the Kenmore, that was rated highest, and I wanted a Dyson. We went to the store, and the Kenmore was SOO heavy! We have a townhouse, and I could not imagine hauling that up and down the stairs! So, I got my wish of a Dyson. I really love it, and I don't find it that heavy. The nice part is that I don't HAVE to lug it up and down the stairs to vacuum, because the hose is long enough to pull without dragging the vacuum along. We have the yellow dyson, but I have heard the pet one is good for just that.
My in-laws have an Oreck, and are very pleased with it. That one is quite light as well.

We bought a yellow Dyson two years ago, and I don't know how I lived without it. It actually freshens the air in any room I vacuum. I love it.

We have been pleased with our Kenmore Progressive canister vac. It's 5 years old and still works like it did the first day. It really sucks!

We have a Riccar that is maybe 7 years old and a Dyson that is probably 5. I like them both, it is really nice not to worry about buying more bags or the Dyson, but changing the bag on the Riccar is not nearly as dusty as dumping the Dyson. The Dyson is great for stairs with the really long hose, the Riccar is to heavy to hold on one step while I get the ones above. They both eat about anything, and the only repair I have had was when I was using the attachments wih the Riccar (which doesn't have a beater bar off switch) and the cord was under the beater bar. It took the cover right off the cord  Good luck! I hated to spend a lot on a sweeper of all things, but some of them are not made for repairing and I hated having to throw out a vacuum every couple of years too!

I am dredging up this old thread in hopes of more input. We've gone through a multitude of vacuums over the last 10 years. First a couple of Hoovers, then a Bissell that did pretty well in actual day-to-day suction but shorted out after 3 years. Since we'd like that one pretty well, I replaced it with what appeared to be the same model or very similar. It's bagless and supposed to be their "pet hair" model. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats and it really does a great job on pet hair but unfortunately if it sucks up even a tiny piece of paper, that causes the hair coming up behind it to make a huge clog. I'm averaging at least every other vacuuming session spending 15 min removing one or more clogs before i can continue. Also, the previous Bissell had removable, washable filters - this one has only a small paper filter that can't be washed, just replaced.
As much as I thought I'd like the bagless I find the dust produced when emptying it is really bad for my asthma, so I would prefer to go back to a bagged vacuum.

I hear you on the dust, Karen. I start sneezing every time I empty the canister. I have an old Dyson and still love it except that feature.
For years I've longed for a Miehle vacuum. I've heard they are very top of the line and great for allergies.
Pets really do create a mess and require the vacuum to be a workhorse.

I'm an Oreck fan. We have an upright and the little baby one that goes with it (the one that the they show in the commercials picking up a 16-pound bowling ball). The bags are hypo-allergenic and when you remove them a piece of cardboard pulls up and over the opening (not a great explanation, sorry). The result is that nothing from inside the bag spills out. No dust, no mess.
