Ds had his 5 yr check up today and the pediatrition was concerned because his forskin does not retract at all and is "a bit longer than normal".
She said that about 1% of intact boys later need corrective surgery or a full circ. around age 8.
she thinks this will be the case with him unless we encourage/assist in him working on retracting it.
modesty issuses aside this seems a bit trumatic but so does the idea of a circ on an 8 yrold.
our doc is pretty hands off and "natural" so i trust her opinion. plus her previous job was in a country where circs were rare so it isnt like she is surgery happy.
any experiece here? sorry about the wtim but not sure who else to ask!
thanks Maggie

No!
No, no, no!
Ack! Sorry, yikes, don't run to do that. From what I've read, the foreskin often doesn't retract until they are older. My son is 4 1/2 and his doesn't retract yet. As long as they are able to get urine out, which obviously he can or you would have had issues before now , or there is an infection (which may happen if it is forcibly retracted), there is very rarely a reason for a boy to have to be circumcised. I don't know what being long has to do with it. Why is that an issue for concern? How long is it supposed to be anyway? lol...
Anyway, sorry, it's certainly your decision and I don't mean to pick on your doctor, I certainly don't know her at all. I would sure research it some more though. It's kind of a "subject" of mine, and it bugs me that doctors can be so quick to circumcise little boys. Can you see them suggesting it so quickly to a grown man? "I'm sorry sir, your *** just doesn't look quite right, we're going to have to take a bit off there."

I'm inclined to agree with Melanie. To be quite honost, I have 6 uncirced boys and I have no idea if anything retracts of not on them! Obviously they have no problems using the bathroom (or roadside, or random tree...) so I don't think I'd do a thing.

my 7 year olds still does not really retract all the way. Dr is not concerned at all.
my uncir'd boys have never had infections or any problems, and retract late.
I definately wait until year 8, but don't worry!

I totally agree with Melanie. I have 4 uncirc guys and a problem really means....can they use the restroom?
Blessings,
Stephanie

My dh had to be circumcised at 14 for the same reason. In adolescence your son will notice if it is a problem or not. I never asked him the details... Germans traditionally do not get circumcised except for medical reasons, so it was not some knife happy family doctor suggesting it. Well, he lived through it at that age. So, if I were you I would just wait and see if it heals naturally.

He has no problems using the restroom and is not uncomfortable.
I wont worry about it, he is our first boy and everone in both dh's family and mine were circumsised so we were not sure.
It is the only area are doc has been pushy about but we are going to be moving before ds' next birthday so I will definetly get some second opinions before doing anything drastic and let him be for now.
Thanks-Maggie

That's nonsense. Sometimes they don't retract until puberty. 5 intact boys here and dh is a doc. It is variable among my boys.
Sadly, she is wrong.
