Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone recommend an historical fiction chapter book (late elementary level) which brings Pilgrim Life to life? My 10 yo daughter is so sensitive.    She needs relatively happy endings and no unnecessary animal deaths.

Thank you in advance.

Lauri - I need to think a bit more and go search my shelves to see if I have a good chapter book, but I'll throw a couple of picture books at you that we found delightful, historically accurate, not syrupy. The kids really enjoyed them - they cover some of the Pilgrim's history, though they mostly focus around the first Thanksgiving.

If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620

If You Were at the First Thanksgiving

The Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving

The Story of the Pilgrims

I highly recommend the following four:

Sarah Morton's Day - A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl

Samuel Eaton's Day - A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Boy

Tapenum's Day - A Wampanoag Indian Boy in Pilgrim Times

Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving

Read together these provide a great context for the time period and avoid all the syrupy, politically correct stories that sometimes circulate. I read these to all my children of listening age (12 - 4) and they all got something out of them! HTH!

Thank you so much, Jennifer. I have most of those books and they are wonderful! I'm hoping to find some late elementary age (5th - 6th grade) chapter books to go along with those terrific picture books. :)

Thanks!
