Moderator update note: Baby Regina was born and is in the NICU. Please pray. Birth story here
Prayer thread for Regina here.
I'll be having baby Regina this Wednesday, and I'm planning on breastfeeding. I tried to breastfeed the other three, but with Sarah, I got sick and my milk dried up, and with the twins, I was so exhausted and they nursed every 30 min. that it just didn't last more than 2 weeks.
I'm going to make myself sucsessful this time around, but I have a question. I've heard that caffeine is a no no when nursing. I had to give up my morning coffee this pregnancy because it was giving me migraines. I have been drinking a cup of coffee every morning since I was 13, so this was really hard. I love my coffee. I have missed it this past 6 months, and I'm wondering if I can go back to having a small cup a day after baby is here, but I don't want to sabotage my nursing. Does anyone know if this would be ok??
Thanks!

I have always had a cup of coffee (actually two cups) while nursing my guys. I've only had one good sleeper in that bunch -- but I'm not sure if that's related because I drank the same with my good sleeper.
And I rarely drink coffee past noon.
The doctor told me that was fine, but more than two he discouraged.

it's perfectly fine to have coffee or tea while pregnant.
I'd be far more concerned about a recurrance of migranes.
ug. I'm so worn out nursing phoebe that I'm refusing to drive anywhere and am absolutely in need of my coffee. I'm a total sleep deprived mess some days.

I'm pretty sure that it was just a pregnancy thing. I've gotten migraines my whole life, but they usually only happen when I'm about to get my period. This was the first time that coffee was the cause. I've been drinking coffee since I was 13 with no issue, so I'm thinking I should be ok once baby is here. At least I hope, because I really miss my morning coffee!

I have had 1,2, and on some days even 3 cups of coffe/day while pregnant (usually only 1 when pg.) and when nursing. Before 9 a.m. I drink coffee, after 9 it's water till around 6, (dinner) when I drink a glass of wine! ;)

Do you love the coffee for the caffeine or just because you like coffee? I like the warmth and fullness coffee gives me in the morning...it helps me ease into the day, especially cold days. I've never really cared about the caffeine; I've tended to enjoy the sugar rush more. I also realized that caffeine crashes sometime trigger headaches (from mild to migraine) for me, so I've mostly been on decaf. for the past few years.
I honestly can't tell any difference in taste between decaf and regular. Then again I'm not a coffee connoisseur, and I never felt I "needed" caffeine. And while decaf. isn't caffeine-free, it's still greatly reduced. So I have no qualms about drinking one to two cups a day while pregnant or nursing--same for tea.

Well, caffeine is a vaso-constrictor.. and since migraines have to do with vascular constricting/dilating.. it can definately cause migraines pregnant or not.. I used to drink caffeinated sodas all the time as a teen.. then they started giving me migraines.. haven't been able to have them now the last 18 yrs or so.
Caffeine is also dehydrating. If you struggle with supply even though it's "ok" to have the caffeine, for you, it may be enough to sabotage your efforts at nursing.
I would wait until you have nursing well established (usually only 2-3 weeks to know that baby is gaining well etc) before trying the coffee and just seeing how it goes.. be sure and work at staying hydrated to counter the effects of the coffee.

All good points Jodie -- I have absolutlely no issues with nursing, so am not necessarily a good example to follow. And probably why my doc gave me the okay.

I think it depends on the baby. All my babies have been very restless whenever I've had any form of caffeine while nursing. That includes decaf coffee, tea, and chocolate!

I am nursing and I drink one decaf every morning. I just don't want a colicky baby because of my drinking coffee with caffeine. I have had very placid babies.

I really like Lisbet's response! That is exactly what I am doing with my youngest. A cup (sometimes two) before nine. With my first, I avoided it for the initial 6 weeks, because it did tend to make her markedly restless. However, it never seemed to bother my son. I would say just watch for cues from the baby. If you notice colic or the baby seems to have a difficult time calming down, then you can begin to really look at your diet.
I will say a prayer that the nursing goes well! Hope that tomorrow goes wonderfully for you and baby Regina! God bless!

I know this asked about nursing but just wanted to mention that caffeine has been associated with miscarriage. Here's a link to Google search results to find more specifics:

I just clicked over to Emily's blog to see if there was any news. There was. Please say a few prayers for Emily, dh-Rob and Baby-Regina, who is still in the hospital.
I couldn't comment on her blog....can anyone else?
