Alright ladies I need help. My DH is a police officer and he goes through scapulars every week. They break apart, they fray at the edges, you name it his scapular has done it. I am desperate for a scapular that is going to last under his balistic vest.
I have thought of sewing a rope-like string to patches???
Oh and it can't be plastic at all because of the sweat factor here in Miami.
Send me any links that you can, please!!!

Mimi~
Have you seen the Rose Scapular site?
They will make the brown scapulars with a THICK ECRU or BLACK cord for $1 more.
Quote:
Want a Brown Scapular with a thick brown or ecru color and don't see it. Just send us a note which one you want and we will make it for you.
$7.oo each.
(We can only do this on Brown Scapulars) |

I suppose if it's not the cord that breaks, then this is not helpful.

Adding......
I linked the "THICK CORD" because when I was talking with the gal there, I asked why would you want a thicker cord.....and she said that some people are just harder on them than others, and they want a more durable cord.
I'm also wondering if you talked to her, if she could reinforce her existing scapulars in some way, if you told her how yours are wearing. Maybe she could do something extra to make them super strong. She's very nice and helpful!

Friends of mine make the most durable scapulars ever. I'm not sure where they get the cloth, but the cord they crochet/chain stitch fishing twine to make a very strong cord, then that is stitched into the cloth and stitched all around the square. It never breaks. I can find out source information if you can't find a good one here.

If your DH has been enrolled in the scapular, he may substitute a Scapular Medal for the original cloth scapular:
From this website:
The Scapular Medal
In 1910, Pope Saint Pius X introduced a scapular medal which may be substituted in most cases for any of the various scapulars. Valid enrollment in the scapulars must, however, be made before the substitution.
The decree, in translation, reads thus:
"For the future all the faithful already inscribed or who shall be inscribed in one or other of the real Scapulars approved by the Holy See (excepting those which are proper to the Third Orders) by what is known as regular enrollment may, instead of the cloth scapulars, one or several, wear on their persons, either round the neck or otherwise, provided it be in a becoming manner, a single medal of metal, through which, by the observance of laws laid down for each scapular, they shall be enabled to share in and gain all the spiritual favors (not excepting what is known as the Sabbatine Privilege of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), and all the privileges attached to each.
"The right side of this medal must show the image of Our Most Holy Redeemer, Jesus Christ, showing His Sacred Heart, and the obverse that of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. It must be blessed with a separate blessing for each of the scapulars in which the person has been enrolled and for which the wearer wishes it to suffice. Finally, these separate blessings may be given by a single sign of the cross , whether in the act of enrollment or later at the convenience of those enrolled, it matters not how long after the enrollment or in what order they may have taken place; the blessing may be given by a priest other than the one who made the enrollment, as long as he possesses the faculty, ordinary, or delegated, of blessing the different scapulars- the limitations, clauses, and conditions attached to the faculty he uses still holding their force. All things to the contrary, even those calling for special mention, notwithstanding" (Holy Office, Rome, December 16, 1910).
I've seen some websites claim that you have to have some sort of extraordinary special super-duper reason to substitute the medal, and that Mary isn't pleased by the medal, etc. But all of that seems to come from nowhere, considering that a pope who was also a saint gave the approval!

I think it's mainly been touted because of the Sabbatine Privilege. The Catechesis and Ritual of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel did have some interesting commentary on the privilege (see for excerpts), but it also states:
What about the Scapular medal?
The Scapular medal can be worn in place of the cloth scapular for good reason but is not the preferred form—precisely because the sacramental link—the visible link—with the cloth panels of the Carmelite habit has been lost.
There is also more information at Catholic Culture, particularly the excerpt from Directory on Popular Piety.
I agree with Erin, that especially in your husband's service that if a medal would be more easily managed in his line of work, that it would be a valid substitution.

But, Jennifer, Pope St. Pius X specifically *included* the Sabbatine privilege in those privileges transferred to the medal; from the quote above, "...wear on their persons, either round the neck or otherwise, provided it be in a becoming manner, a single medal of metal, through which, by the observance of laws laid down for each scapular, they shall be enabled to share in and gain all the spiritual favors (not excepting what is known as the Sabbatine Privilege of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), and all the privileges attached to each."
To me, this means that the laity (other than those in third orders) can substitute a medal for the cloth form of not just the Brown Scapular but any other in which they've been enrolled, without losing any of the privileges of each. Provided that the person has first been enrolled in the usual manner, and that the medal is blessed once for each scapular for which it is being substituted, there doesn't seem to be any specific detriment to making the substitution.

Sorry, I missed that. I've never seen that before, as in all the other materials I read said the medal didn't have the Privilege. But I'm not worried about the Sabbatine Privilege; that is not why I wear the Scapular. There are historic problems in the Privilege, so whether it's real or not doesn't negate the beauty of the sacramental of the Brown Scapular.

Thanks SuzanneG
I ordered two of the St. Michael scapulars with the thick ecru ropes.
I am so excited to get them and they really seem to be exactly what we needed.
God Bless you all for your advice.
Oh and Redcardigan, I wear the scapular medal:)

I don't have anything to add to the scapula discussion but I just wanted to thank you and your husband for the risks you take to ensure the safety of our communities and country.
I have said a prayer for his safety.
Blessings,
Waverley
