Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read An Orange For Frankie? It is featured now at the Emmanuel website. It may be more of a picture book. I am trying to build our library of good books for Advent/Christmas and I'm just wondering if this would be a nice addition.

It is a beautiful story that we really love. The themes are great: obedience, honesty, giving (but not heavy handed). The post-script is a tear jerker, so I decided not to read it to my small ones last year.

Many Patricia Polacco books make me cry, but they are wonderful.   Another nice Christmas story by her is Christmas Tapestry (and I love Thank You, Mr. Falker - not Christmasy but I can't help mentioning it    )

Thanks Jennifer! I cry easy when I am reading books to my kids that are a bit emotional. I read The Miracle of Jonathan Toomey last night and balled. My 12 yo ds gets really frustrated (or at least acts that way) when I do this. He said I should practice reading it a couple of times without crying before I read it to the kids! Oh well. I guess I should warn him ahead of time if a book is a tear jerker!

Hi Becky,
You might check your library -- that's where I first saw it.

Also, I wanted to make sure that I was clear: I read the book to the kids, just skipped the "afterward".

Oh yeah, I cry with Jonathan Toomey too!

I started reading The Miracle of St. Nicholas and had to pass it over to my 10 year old to finish because I was crying so much....probably mostly hormone related, but still, I can relate!
