Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

You all got my curiosity up by all this talk about RS math. I have been looking for something for my 6yo for a while, and I think that RS would appeal to my son. Even though I am a lazy homeschooling mom, I know that I would take the time out for this since his very favorite thing to do is play games.

I know this program introduces numbers in a different way, and I was wondering if it's going to be a problem if he already know his numbers the regular way? Also, how much time do you devote to this every day?

Thanks!

Beth

He will be doing level B, btw.

No -- all of my kids learned numbers the regular way and didn't have trouble.

Hmm... it depends. We can spend a loooong time on it somedays and other be done in 15 minutes and just play a math game. Some lessons look way too long, so I skip them.

My answer would be the same as Maryan's, except I haven't been brave enough to skip, I just divide the lesson into two sessions.

Okay, I have another question--do you still teach them the RS method counting, and how do you explain it to your student (and in why they teach you that way)?

Yep I still did the RS method even though they knew that 30 is thirty, not one of them seemed to blink twice when we were doing RS that I told him to call it 3 ten. I think it is natural for them because of the use of the abacus so it flows. And it really isn't long into the whole thing that they switch back to using the "regular" terms for the numbers anyways.

My two oldest already knew how to count the 'normal way' and had no problem counting the 'RS way.' They don't spend too much time counting the 'RS way' anyway, just long enough to understand place value. When it came time to revert back, there were no problems. With my 8 yr. old, I still go back to the RS way when we are subtracting as it cuts down on the confusion for him.

As far as time goes, it depends on the lesson and the child. Some lessons are short and of the others are too long, then I just cut them in half and do the rest the next day. It also depends on the child. When we were doing Level B, we regularly had to do one lesson in two days. When it came time for my son to do B, we very rareely spent more than 20 minutes on a lesson.

Blessings,
Julia

Ditto what everyone else says about counting both ways and splitting lessons (and btw Jenn, I didn't skip the first year -- it was only when Kacky told me that she skipped lessons that I had an aha moment. It was a few cutting geometry ones that I would skip)

And Kacky I love your tulip avatar.

We are going to get this next year for my ds. I had my dh read about RS and read up to the point of 'having student visualize problems' and he was sold. He said "I don't have to read anymore because Ethan already does this--we are going with this program". Thanks for all of your help!
