Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have had great success this year teaching the kiddos about the continents using the boxes I put together over the summer along with other independent activities like mapwork, cultual question forms, lots of books from the library, and games.

March we start our final continent, Europe, and as I was putting final touches on everything and ordering library materials I realized just how much there is to this continent...different regions, major countries, history, and so on. I want to try to simplify it a bit if for no other reason than for myself not to feel so overwhelmed...but how?

This is our first year delving into a full geography plan and so I want to give them a good general overview without leaving out anything major. Next year we can study specific countries I think.

So, any ideas for me?

My first thought would be to focus on some specific countries, with some overview of the continent. You are right that there is SO much in the culture of Europe that is harder to pinpoint than other continents - and I think most of that comes from Europe providing most of the impetus of history in the US (most, not all!).

Perhaps some countries could be grouped together by region - several of the eastern countries are similar enough for an introduction to the continent, for example. For example, I have a friend in Bulgaria who is able to travel to the countries around Bulgaria and without having learned their languages, she can communicate with them fairly quickly, because the languages are similar enough.
