I decided that my birthday present to myself will be a book and materials to learn to knit. My birthday is still three months away but I just got the Knit Picks catalog (I buy yarn for crochet) and I so want to make socks for my family and sock monkey dolls for my kids.

Dh is amazingly supportive of all my craft hobbies so I'm hoping maybe I can borrow against some expected birthday gifts and get going sooner.

So . . . I need a book recommendation. I know the basic knitting stitch. I think. I learned as a kid and found knitting to be incredibly frustrating. I'm also very bad at deciphering those little stitch diagrams. Is there a good book for teaching myself? I mostly want to knit socks and toys for my kids at this point.

I was given a yarn ball for Christmas and have had good success learning to knit with the dvd that accompanies it!

I know Mary G. has a list somewhere of recommended titles.

I really enjoy both Knitting in Plain English (make sure you get the updated edition) and Kids Knitting.

Here are a few lists that might help:

1. beginner books
2. a few more, beyond the first stages
3. "must haves" for all knitters

That should hold you a while ... holler if you need any help or advice!

Wanted to mention a post I just wrote at my knitting blog ... seems I've found a really great beginning/nervous knitter book that is the best I've seen.

Luise Roberts and Kate Haxell's First Knits: Projects for Beginning Knitters really is a great book ...

KIPE has always been my "go to" book. Whenever I get stuck I read the directions out loud--yes, I tend to go off by myself until I learn something, and do the instructions. Since it has worked for me , I've probably missed other great reads, but this is the one I found in the library years ago.

This isn't a book, but a site I use is knittinghelp.com. They have videos to demonstrate the different stitches and terms, and that has helped me more than any of the books I've read.
