i have an almost 3 yr old son who is dependent on the passie to go to sleep and really really would like to have it when he gets scared or when he is just tired (like in the car when it is close to nap time). we have limited it to bedtime, but i am wondering at what age we should cut that off too. we havent taken him to the dentist yet, so i dont knwo if it is affecting his teeth. should i just let him grow out of it on his own, or should i push him to give it up?
thanks
monica

I haven't used one with my children, so helpful advice from that prespective BUT I used one myself until I was that age (3 at least) and my parents were concerned (I was told when I was older ) and what they did was just before Christmas, they came into my bedroom one evening and said that if I gave over the pacifier, I would receive a present and so I swapped and never looked back...I actually have that memory of doing it, for me it was a lovely memory, for the present I received was my beloved 'big ted' I treasured all through my childhood years. So there's a prespective that is my very own!

Both my boys used pacifiers - and it was almost exclusively for bedtime after they started walking. My oldest stopped at 3 -- we talked about it A LOT leading up to his 3rd birthday, and he gave it up pretty easily at that point.
My 2nd child - I tried a similar approach, but he used one until he was almost 4; and even then if he happened to find one he would scurry off and hide it in his bed.
So, no great advice but my boys used one until 3 & 4 with no ill effects on their teeth (but I did strictly enforce the "only in bed" rule.)
My daughter never had an interest in one at all -

super nanny to the rescue! (where I saw this idea!
have him help you gather them all together
decorate a fancy box to put them in
put the box on the front/back patio for the "paci fairy"
when he wakes up the pacifiers have been replaced with a special gift (could be a toy, a "woobie" quality blanket, or whatever you feel best)

We aren't at this stage yet, but my 7mo.old uses a pacifier, never had a kiddo use one before.
I remember hearing one time that if you put a pin hold in the pacifier, it obviously let's the air out. Wherever I heard it (I think it was one of parenting type magazines) said then your little tike thinks it's broken, you confirm it's broken and say "oh well" let's fine something else to help you sleep, like a new blanket or something.
Just another idea I guess.

My dd used a paci, and as she approached 3 years old, we "lost" them one, by one, until there was just one left. On the eve of her third birthday, we had her put it on the patio table, so "a mommy bunny could come and take it for her baby bunnies," and that was it. I think the mommy bunny left a small gift in it's place. She did fine adjusting without it, too. By the time a child is three, they can understand letting something go better. My youngest just weaned from nursing at the age of three, after I told him that I didn't have any more milk for him (true, and nursing was becoming increasingly uncomfortable). When he asked where my milk went, I told him "maybe it went to all the mommies who have little babies to nurse," and he really accepted that explanation well.

We just "weaned" our two year old from hers... We cut the tip and lower on the paci so she would think ( and she did) say they were yucky. I told her if they were yucky to throw it away and she did. when she went down for a nap she asked for it, but I reminded her it was yucky. She made it through and even napped and was over it in a day... BTW.. her lovey and paci went hand in hand.. never separated. I thought this was going to be SOOO hard, but it was a breeze... Needless to say, her front teeth are bucking forward due to her paci time. Prayers for your decision.

ok,you ladies have inspired me. we can give up the passie without major trauma. i think i will make it a big part of turning 3 in april. we can decorate a box, put them in it, say goodbye, etc. i was wondering if any of you had to substitute another comfort item for the passies. like a blanket or stuffed animal?
