Hello,

For those who are interested in a real Classical education, check out Classical Liberal Arts Academy. I checked their site and was impressed by the school's goals and objectives. What's more it's very Catholic! And affordable,too. The Director, William Michael, answers emails promptly.

I just enrolled my 2 boys in their Grammar I and Classical Catechism Classes and will commence classes next week.

For those who might find the price a little steep, I did find the Catechism of the Bible text they use online for free.

We started CLAA last month with the Catechism l course. The link above to the online Catechism of the Bible does not match what my kids are studying so that might be for a different course.

We've been very pleased and look forward to adding the Grammar l course in another month or so. Mr. Michael is quick to respond to emails and is great with the kids when they need to ask him a question using the online chat feature.

Hi Trish,

We started CLAA on the last week of February and so far our family loves it. In Grammar I, for every other lesson, Grammar rules are presented for memory work then for the weeks in between, the students learn Latin using the verses in the Gospel of John (as in the sample lesson). So everything is pretty straightforward. Catechism is taken directly from Baltimore Catechism 4. Lessons are divided to 2 parts: Prayers and Catechism. Prayers are explained part by part and Catechism questions also have meaty explanations that are very good discussion starters. At the end of each lesson, students have to take an exam and get a score of 100% in order to go to the next lesson (they can take it several times).

I really like CLAA because it makes homeschooling simple for us. We discuss Catechism lessons as a family following my younger son's lessons.My oldest ds works independently on his lessons and directs most of his questions to Mr. Michael who promptly responds. I help out my younger ds with Grammar and assist both in their memory work (especially my younger ds). I also make sure that all requirements for each lesson are met. So while both of them are working, I get to do reading time and a short "lesson" time with my toddler.

We do Catechism and Grammar in the morning and Math and other subjects in the afternoon.

Though it seems that we're doing less, I am confident that my kids are learning much more.

Hi Mia,

Thank you for keeping us posted!

We will be enrolling in July. Right now we're in the gardening/yard work "mode" so we're busy enjoying the nice weather & working when we can. I'm planning to have my 10-year-old dd start Grammar I & Catechism II. Our 2 boys, 13 & 15, will be taking Scriptural Catechism, Dialectic (very challenging!) and Humanities. I will try to post here & let you all know how it goes.

I hadn't checked this forum in awhile and noticed this discussion.

We signed up in April for Grammar 1, will add possibly Catechism and Math when Sept gets here.

I have decided on doing Grammar 1 next year with my 3 kids. I have started planning the weekly schedule and I would like to know, from the families that have experience with Grammar 1, how many times a week do you work on it? I assume the memorization every day, but what about the lessons?

Hi Simona,

The schedule recommended by the Michaels is here. Ideally you should work on Grammar everyday. The memorization is part of the lessons. Since it's at your pace, I'd just set a time limit.

Hi Annie,

Here's another thread on CLAA that may be helpful.

We continue to be very pleased with the program. Now that the kids have memorized a good portion of the 1st chapter of St. John's gospel, it's been very exciting for them to hear it read at Mass. The World Chronology course has been excellent as well. Because we review after 5 lessons or so, there's very good retention. Lesson 9 requires the students to write a narrative of all that they learned about the Ancient period of history. My daughter's on Lesson 7 in Clasical Math which requires that she writes 4 proofs! So far, so good!

We are loving it so much. They will soon be opening the Writers School, which I can't wait to see. Everything has exceeded our expectations.

My oldest two are now enrolled in Catechism 1, Grammar 1, Arithmetic, Classical Vocab and World Chronology. My youngest is enrolled in Catechism 1 and Petty School Reading.

We recently learned about this program from a friend in our homeschool group and my husband is encouraging me to look into it more. I like what I see, so far, but I want to know what those of you who have been using it for a while think about the program.
