Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have experience with this math program? We need something that the older kids can do more independently. DS11 is doing Singapore 6B now, so what level might he transfer into? Any reviews would be appreciated....thanks!

My girlfriend uses it with her older kids and seems to love it. She is not on this board, but I will ask her about it and and report back to you as soon as possible.

We've used ALEKS for about three years now. It's very good as a supplement, but I don't consider it a complete math program. It's wide and shallow, covering many topics, none in-depth. Even so, I think it does a very good job of filling in gaps that you may not even be aware of. We use it for 20 minutes per day, and spend another 10 minutes on ALEKS Quicktables. Quicktables has been very helpful for my youngest dd, who has difficulty with her multiplication and addition tables.

The program is not completely independent for us. Sometimes the children will need extra help because ALEKS only explains things in one way--if you don't "get" that one way, you are out of luck, lol.

You can place your son in whatever grade he would normally be in. They will do assessments regularly, and when he completes the pie chart for his current grade you can move him to the next grade. My 3rd grade son just started 4th grade ALEKS last week, so if your son already knows most of 5th grade he won't be there long.

Hope this is helpful!

Marianne, here is my firend's review on ALEK's.

First, it always reviews the prior skills - so even if you're mostly working on geometry during a given week, you don't forget long division. Since it uses artificial intelligence, ALEKS plans your work around skills you need further work on.

Second, you pay for ALEKS by the month or for six months or by the year, rather than by the course, so if the child progresses more rapidly than expected, you don't have to pay for another course, just continue. Vice versa, I recently moved my ds back to a high school level algebra prep class which he's whizzing through. When he finishes it next week, we'll just put him back into Algebra I. ALEKS will assess his placement in the course and start teaching him from his new starting point.

I find the explanations quite clear, and I can 'teach' from them if the child really needs help. My more social kids like a bit more human interaction than ALEKS gives them, so sometimes I sit with them while they work, adding comments or support as necessary. (It's rarely 'necessary', but they like it sometimes!)

Placement is very simple - give the child an assessment in the course you're considering. If they get more than about 75%, try the next more advanced course. If they get less than about 10%, drop down a course and take that assessment.

Here is a link to a one month free trial:

Hope this helps!
