Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here's a great chapter book/read-aloud we just finished:
George Washington, Spymaster: How the Americans Outspied the British and Won the Revolutionary War by Thomas B. Allen. This led us on some great rabbit trails all about covert operations, spies and counterspies, codes and code-making, invisible ink and we're still not done. This was a great addition to our American Revolution unit and explains why some "serendipitous" events were actually engineered (such as the taking of Trenton).

Enjoy!

Oh, Mary, you must go! The Spy Museum is an absolute favorite with my dc! And I do believe that we will visit again the next time we are there.

We enjoyed that one as well. Have you seen the other books by this author team? I haven't read the Harriet Tubman book, but we currently have the Lincoln one.

Mr. Lincoln's High-Tech War describes the technology of the day and how Lincoln and the Union used it to their advantage during the Civil War. Very interesting.

Oh, definitely need to remember this one if we ever get out of the colonial/Revolution stage (we've been having so much immersed in this era!).

Bumping this up- I just finished reading this book about GW. It was fantastic!
I could not put it down.

It's been a long while since I studied the Revolutionary War in school, but I don't remember learning half of what was in this book. I suddenly feel like I have a real understanding of what happened and why.

For instance, I never really knew why Benedict Arnold turned traitor ( he was snowed under with debt and needed a lot of cash in a hurry). And I always thought he was hanged for it, but despite several attempts to kidnap him so he could be hanged (one led by the Marquis de LaFayette), he always escaped and died a very sad and untrusted man.

Also- I didn't realize what a huge blow BA's defection was for GW- that on hearing the news his troops saw him cry for the first (and maybe only) time during the war.

All the espionage that went on was fascinating reading for me. I didn't know GW ran his own spy ring and his code name was 711. (Is that how the convenience store got its name- in his honor? ).

Anyway- a great read. He really was an incredible man.
I think I'll read this aloud with my kids this year

Did you know that George Washington basically started the French and Indian War? I read Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars 1690-1760 It begins with the European conflicts and ends with the battles in North America. Maria Rioux recommended it and I really enjoyed it! A few graphic scenes, though, so as a read aloud it would need a bit of editing. I did, however, read some wonderful selections out of it to supplement our American history study.
