Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is the newest book by a favorite author of ours. It is based on a true story from Linoln's youth - when he nearly drowns but is rescued by his friend, Austin Gollaher. It's a story I hadn't heard before (but have since come across it in several biographies) and is interesting to think about in relation to our county's history in "what if..." Austin hadn't been able to save him. The format is interesting - told as a tall tale and with the author addressing the reader and the illustrator at various points.

We've read this 2 or 3 times.....and the kids LOVE IT! Me? Hmmm....i'm not crazy about it.....maybe that's why Deborah Hopkinson is a children's author, and I'm not! She knows what kids love! There is nothing WRONG with it......it's just a book I would not GUSH about.

Love the last few pages though.....led to great discussions about divine providence, God's plan, everything has meaning, everyone impacts everyone else .........all the It's a Wonderful Life things.

And, there's suddenly a renewed interest in painting with a brush these past couple of days!

That's funny, Suzanne. I'm not crazy about it either - especially in comparison to her other books - most of which I think are wonderful. I do think it's an interesting story and like all those things you mention being at the end also. I don't particularly like books where the author talks to the readers as if they were all in a room together - but you are right kids really seem to find that exciting or something.

I kind of wrote it off after first reading it several months ago. I saw it made the list of finalists for the Cybils and it's been on several other top lists, that is when I gave it a second chance and figured a lot of folks are loving it.

I love Deborah Hopkinson's books but I haven't seen this one.

I am seeing a lot of curious picture books being published. Don't get me wrong. There are lots of wonderful books being published and there is definitely more consideration being given towards the artwork going into them. But there is a lot of ????? things being published.

And now they are burning the old treasures due to the stupid CPSIA scandal.

Better go over your bookshelves and hoard those little nuggets of gold.
