Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I didn't know whether to put this here or in Living Literature???

My son is really enjoying Phineas Gage. He is devouring every detail and it seems to be fueling the idea of becoming a doctor, which he has had before.

I'm having a hard time finding any other books like this...something that is about a "case", a medical condition and how it was treated, in a real person, not fictional. Does that make sense? Any ideas or suggestions?

I did find one book at the library about a girl's life the first year she had polio, so I put that on hold.

We have Tiner's The History of Medicine, which has chapters on the development and discovery of drugs and methods to treat illnesses in a story format. Both of my kids have really enjoyed it around the 5th-6th grade or so...

We have biographies of important pioneers in medicine (technology of all sorts)-. We have a biography on The Discoverer of Insulin (Dr. Banting). IEEE magazine recently had an article about how the modern defribulator was developed which my dh highlighted for us to read. They also had articles about testing stradivarius violins, Chinese nuclear program development history, and other esoteric topics of individual interest, ie a sneaky way to get in some extra science reading.
