Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

who watches tv in the evenings?!?

I received my new daily schedule planner (Managers of their Homes) and they had a whole section of sample schedules from different homeschooling moms. Not ONE wrote that they watch tv. NOT ONE!

I realize that their is probably something more constructive I could be doing with my time (though I do fold laundry while watching tv)...but...I like to veg-out in the evenings. The supper has been cooked, eaten, cleaned-up...the house has been cleaned and picked up all day long...the children have been fed, bathed, loved, educated, played with all day long...and now, I want to watch Biggest Loser or SuperNanny. Is that really wrong?

I am here to confess...I like tv.
Am I really the only one?

(Raising hand) I like TV. I will join your confession group. I actually like it a little too much, but I watch it for the same reasons you do.

I'd often rather read or be on the computer.. but sometimes.. especially if I'm just dead tired but not sleepy.. I like putting on a movie to watch. Or if I have tons of laundry to fold.. a movie is nice to have going while I'm working.

I just started DVRing the reruns of ER and watching them after the kids go to bed, but before hubby gets home. I also fold clothes or nurse infant. I think as an ex-surgical tech, I need the medical fix.

In my home, it's my hubby who needs to veg out in front of the TV in the evenings. I may be in the room, but my nose is in a book.

HOWEVER, I do veg out with my family and watch American Idol.

I don't watch much TV, but I do like to veg in the evenings with a movie, read, computer, etc. I think we need a bit of that down time where we aren't constantly going.

That is how I destress in the evenings...esp since DH is working the night shifts most days of the week (split shifts), so he is still sleeping after the dc go to bed...he gets up, eats dinner, and then goes back to bed for a few hours before he leaves at 11 for work...

So I need to do something quiet til he gets up at 10ish to get ready for work.

The tv is at the other end of the house...

Vanna, I think most (all?) of the homeschooling moms I know in-real-life watch TV in the evenings. I don't, but it really isn't because I think it's wrong- I just don't enjoy it (except for the Oregon Field Guide that's on PBS once/week). But don't feel badly that you watch. Like you said,

Then, watch! We all have to figure out how we best unwind and relax in the evenings. If The Biggest Loser is a good way for you to do that, then do it guilt-free!

One more thought: we tend to demonize TV as the great time-sucker, but really, anything we do in excess has the same effect. I may not be tempted to watch too much (or any) TV, but I can't say the same thing about the computer. If I let it, computer time gobbles up a lot of my time and energy, and that's just as bad as watching too much TV... moderation is the key, right?

Me too! I may knit, read or surf the web on my laptop but I do like to veg out in front of the TV after a long day. When my dh is traveling I like the background noise to distract me from the creaks and groans the house makes.

When dh was deployed I was a huge HGTV junkie, I still am somewhat, but dh does not care for it as much as I do.

I LOVE to watch TV......which is precisely why I do not have TV.

I HAVE a TV...just no free, tv or cable or satelite.

I do not have TV because I do not want to have to moderate myself.    This is one place wehre I might give in....I mean, I WILL not have self-control.

I DO watch a movie 1-3 x per week....but, I rarely just watch....I feel I must be doing something...folding laundry, organizing paperwork or school work....scrapbooking....in order to allow myself to be justfied to be watching. It is MY issue with MY watching.

I think as long as you are moderate....and it sounds like you are......I would not worry about it.

Have fun! I am jealous!

Yes. We will be revoking your 'Homeschool Mother' status immediately.

No - it isn't just you. And, this current TV season is one of the best in quite awhile, Monday has Heroes, Tuesday has Fringe, Wednesday has Lost, Thursday has Supernatural, Friday has Battlestar Galactica....

I don't watch reality shows like SuperNanny or American Idol, but that is just personal preference.

But yeah - I like TV...

Bill and I watch "The Office" on Netflix a few times a week at least. Sometimes there is also a useful activity, sometimes not.   I've found that I laugh very little in general, but I laugh until I cry when I watch this show. It has been a great stress release.

No TV here. We watch movies on Friday nights, that's it. Honestly, even if I wanted to watch, I couldn't fit it in. It's hard enough getting a little time online. But I am not exactly known for my time management skills.

I would rather read or play a game with the older kids.

Sometimes I like to watch.....usually only 1 show regularily....CSI or Without a Trace. I'm in a no-tv-phase right now, and I don't know why......maybe only because there are lots of books I'd like to read.

dh and I like to watch movies, but we haven't been in movie-watching-phase for a couple months or so. dh likes to veg in front of the tv at night, but i don't like his shows, so I do something else in the room with him...sew, read, bills, computer, etc. .

When dh travels, i like to have a movie in while doing other things, just as background noise.......cuz ya know.....there just isn't enough NOISE around here during the daytime hours!!!

me! and I do schedule it in too.
Monday 7:50 - 9:00 Heros
Sunday 7:50 - 9:00 Desperate Housewives
Friday 10 - 11:00 Red Green followed by Dr Who

dh likes american idol for reasons I can't figure out.
he feels the same about me watching Desperate Housewives.

We've rubbed off on each other with Friday nights. I coudln't see the allure of Red Green and now love it. He thought Dr. Who was stupid and now he's into it too.

Heros is a huge deal for me and the 3 older kids to watch after the littler ones go to bed.

She spoke for both of us! For me, it was Stargate (all of them!) - but I didn't want to pay for cable, so I curbed it that way. We never did get good enough reception for PBS and that's about all that I will have on with my son around anyway - so we just do movies on the tv set - and those about once a week.

NOW. With all that said, there were about 3 weeks in my life when I wanted to get my house really clean and really organized. We were preparing to move across country for a full-time Montessori training and I didn't want to move junk, and I wanted things organized before we moved. SO. I borrowed every single season of Stargate SG-1 from a friend (except the final season which wasn't on DVD yet), and while watching I had a certain amount of things to get done during each episode. Then I could not watch another one until I got a certain amount of other things done (that had to be away from the tv). My son did join me for segments of that, but he mostly helped me or played outside. He likes the theme song only.

Talk about totally weird.    But it worked! That was the last TV I really watched. Since then, I've just had no interest. In the evenings, I personally choose to read, or do some crafty things - and just enjoy the silence which I just don't get enough of during the day.

Vanna,
My husband is a TV producer/director. We -- ahem -- watch TV sometimes. Pays the mortgage

Ditto. The first time I watched it, I totally did not get it. Then something clicked and now, that's our date night. Half an hour to watch The Office, once a week. The incessant sports TV isn't relaxation; it's work.

I usually fold laundry at night so it's nice to do something else while folding.
