Mary Chris's Monday dinner thread reminded me I wanted to ask this question (she mentioned flat iron steak  )
I was wondering if anyone used a straightening iron on their hair and if they liked it. Our ex-babysitter (college age) used one and it looked great on her but I'm wondering if it's a "young folks" thing .
My hair is kind of oddly wavy and frizzy though, so someone recommended one. I don't know anything about them, though. I grew up in the curling iron age.

I have perfectly straight hair, but it's quite thick so it can be difficult to style with a round brush quickly. I use a flat iron to direct and smooth my hair and to make my bangs behave.

I used a friend's last year at this time. I don't really have frizzy hair, but it even made a difference with my hair.....just making it look really smooth and slick. I liked it.

I use a straightening iron every single time I do my hair. My hair is very curly on the right side, and barely wavy on the left, and straightening the curly side is easier for me, and lasts longer, than curling the straighter side.
My advice is to buy a professional straightening iron, unless your hair is pretty straight and smooth to begin with. They are costly--over $100 dollars, but well worth it. I had one (the brand was HAI) for years, but dropped it several times on the tile floor and it was finally unrepairable. I replaced it with a $50 model from Target, and I am not happy with it. It takes much longer to straighten my hair, it doesn't glide without pulling (and my hair is breaking), and the results are not nearly as smooth.
There you have my 2 cents!

My daughters have done my hair with theirs - it looks good. Just too much for me to do in my usual life. But fun once in awhile. But, I rarely even get time (make time - uhhh, I guess) to blow dry my hair. I bought her a professional one for a Christmas present as I was warned not to go with the cheaper ones.

I've used one a couple of times. My hair *is* frizzy if left to its own devices. I straightened it before a deliriously fun evening out with my hubby. It was time consuming, but I felt such a lift because my hair looked trendier than my normal "blow and go" look.
I second (maybe third?) the advice to invest in a nice one. Since you have to pull your hair through, it is best to invest in one that won't cause damage to your hair...or any more damage than applying an inordinate amount of heat and pressure and ironing your hair into submission.
It does look kinda neat when it's done.

I have been doing my hair with one as well.....I kept thinking about the whole "Curly Girl" thing that went around here a few years ago....but you know what? I just don't look as nice with wavy, crazy hair. I like the style I have now where the front sides are slanted down, with the back stacked....and you can't get that if your hair is all flippy do all over. So....there you go...I wonder if I'll look back at pictures from these years (thinking I looked pretty mod and cool) and go, "Gosh, what was I thinking?!?!? Straightened hair and big clunky funky glasses?!?!?"

I have BIG curly hair, but sometimes I like to straighten it, especially in the winter months when there's no humidity. I know my husband loves it, so it's nice to do every once in a while!
I have a great straitening iron, a Chi. They are expensive but 100% worth the cost, as they take much less time than blow drying and using a non-ceramic straightener. I have hair half way down my back and it typically takes me 10-15 min to straighten with the Chi. To be fair though, I don't blow dry, I usually either let my hair dry on it's own and get crazy huge and frizzy, or I french braid it until it's dry and then straighten. Blow dryers make my hair CRAZY.

I'm with the majority...try borrowing one from someone and see if you like it, and if you do, invest in a good one. I think mine is HAI, as well, and it has lasted several years...when I straighten my hair, I don't have to do haircuts/trips to the salon more than a couple times per year, so I figure I'm actually SAVING money! (that's how I explained it to dh, anyway! )

I would love to know how to use one to "make my bangs behave" as Patty said. I'm tired of my bangs, the rascals. Oh, I get a haircut tomorrow..I'll ask the stylist.

My three older daughters use the straightener almost daily. I use it when I am going out somewhere and want my hair to behave. It definitely makes my hair look nicer. I just dont have time to use it regularly.
My daughter got one called CHI for Christmas. She loves it. My pocketbook didn't!

My hair stylist has used one on my hair and I love how it comes out. I have a lot of thick, coarse hair and the gray ones are wiry. When it's straightened it feels smooth and silky. I was just telling a friend during the Superbowl (we didn't really watch the game)that I wish I could have it straightened all the time. The problem is that it takes the hair stylist about 45 minutes. I'm assuming it would take me even longer. But it does stay nice for a couple of days if I don't wash it.

I nervously bought one about a year ago, thinking it would be hard to use. Its not. I *love* mine. But it does get hotter than a curling iron so you have to move fast!
