Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 9yod loves to write. I haven't done much in the way of formal teaching. I've read lots and lots of good books to her and she is a voracious reader herself. She writes letters to family and friends on her own, writes and illustrates short stories (often inspired by books she has read), and keeps a journal. I haven't assigned any of this stuff. She just does it. This week, she begged to be allowed to work on her short story as part of handwriting practice.    Okay!

Anyway, we're at the end of a quarter, and I'd like to use the short story she is working on as her writing assignment for the next week or two. Any thoughts on how to do this? I give her an assignment sheet each week detailing what she is supposed to work on each day. I was thinking of just writing "work on your short story" in the Writing slot...but then what? Do I go over it with her afterwards and pull out mispelled words and grammar mistakes? What about having her write a final draft correcting all her mispellings and grammar mistakes? Should I bother with that at her age? I don't want to kill her interest, but I do want to use love of writing as a springboard. I'm not much of a writer myself and this is the subject I feel least comfortable "teaching." (I am a bit of a grammar nerd, though. I just don't think I'm a very good writer) Hence the relaxed approach.

Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!
Dawn

My 9 year old loves to write too. She is determined to be published, so I have been going over her writing as her editor. I explain that when a writer sends his work to a publisher, an editor will go over it to fix any mistakes. So, once in a while, we go over it together with a red pen and I help her to see where she needs to work on things.

I don't do this with all of her writing, but if she asks, I'll help. Right now she's working on a story to send to the American Girl magazine for a contest, so we'll go over that together, and she'll rewrite it for her final draft. Otherwise, I just let her write.   I don't want to kill her enjoyment by turning it into "work".

HTH!

I second just letting her write and helping with the editing if she asks.
