Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I bought rump roast last Friday and it has been in my fridge since then. I know I should have put it in the freezer but I was lazy. I pulled it out earlier and wrapping has a hole in it. The sell by date was 1-25. It smells ok, like meat but I am worried about eating it. It is cooking in the crock pot right now and it doesn't stink but..........

Who do you call and ask questions like this?? All my friends are busy schooling their children, I don't want to interupt them with a silly question like this!!!

Mary Chris--If it was in the fridge the whole time, I think you're okay. Beef is much less worrisome that poultry in general and if the color and smell seem okay and there was no slimy film over it, I would still use it. But then again, my time in the third world made me pretty lenient about food safety issues .

if it's a *sell by* date.. there's usually some leeway in the time anyway.. and I would also use it if it smelled fine.

Ime, meat that is bad smells it. If you can stick your nose it in and it doesn't make your stomach turn, I say its fine.

Ditto. Make a nice gravy with those drippings and some mashed potatoes and the kids will love it!

That's what I'd say too.....it's fine.

I always call my dad (former butcher in his teens and 20's) about stuff like that.

No seriously. Not to hyjack the thread, but I am curious. I have about 25 minutes before DH comes home.

My mom laughed at my description, but I took some steaks out of the freezer, defrosted them in the sink in water, and they are not the nice red color, and they smell a little like my baby's diapers - you know, new baby, breast fed diapers. It's not a BAD smell, but I hate that it's so close. KWIM?

they're treated to stay red in the packages at the store.. once they're exposed to air much they will turn color.. so not being "red" is generally not a problem.

If the water was hot the steak could have cooked a bit while it was thawing.. and/or it could have a bit of freezer burn that changes the look and quality but it's still safe to eat.

otherwise.. there would be a bit of bloody smell (which can be sharp) but it shoudln't be a rotten odor.

I had to throw away a pork loin just last week due to no one's fault but my own. I still mourn the loss of that loin.
