Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

From now until the end of January, Paraclete Press has all their music cds on sale. Single cds $12, double cds $20.

They are the distributor of the lovely Gregorian Chant cds from the Abbey of Solesmes.

Paraclete Press

A very good price to stock up on liturgical year listening.

Stephanie,

Yes, I have some, and have heard them. My quick answer since I'm about to give piano lessons is that you can't go wrong with the Solesmes recordings. The Solesmes method is classic and beautiful and well-done. Depending on what kind of listening to chant (beginning, etc.) will sort out what you'll enjoy.

I'll be back to list what I have and recommendations, and perhaps some links on the impact Solesmes had on chant in America.

I do love Gregorian Chant, and I look for recordings to play. I'm in no way an expert, and I feel like the more I learn, the less I know.

I do have many different kinds of recordings, but Solesmes is the bulk of my collection and also what I compare everything else to. Their cds I can play and have on in the background without being annoying or repetitive after a while. I can't say the same about all the other recordings.

Not all chant is the same. There is chant for the Divine Office, chant for Mass, with the antiphons and propers and sequences of the liturgy of the day, and parts of the Mass, and also some hymns. It wasn't all made for "easy listening" but text painting for the Liturgy.

I just ordered Gregorian Melodies I and II, and Sundays in Ordinary Time. The first choice I think would be a good smattering of chants of the Church year. Very beautiful.

I also have Learning about Gregorian Chant, first recomended by Valerie. It's very good.

Gregorian Anthology is another cd with excerpts from around the liturgical year, and I recommend it.

Others I have:
Vespers and Compline (don't really listen to this)
Easter
Requiem Mass (I used this throughout November)
and some Christmas ones, I believe.

I'd love to get the cds for Holy Week, but I can't at this time. I would like some meditative ones to play during Lent and Holy Week. So much of my music is for Christmas.

I am not saying "buy, buy, buy". I'm personally looking to fill the seasons of the year with liturgical music, and foremost in the Church's tradition is chant, so that's why I have such enthusiasm.

Some of these recordings are older, but still quite beautiful. They might not be as pristine and crisp and clear as modern chant cds, but I think it's all recorded live in their chapel. It's not dead but living and breathing chant.
